파주시는 경기도 유형문화재 보광사 대웅보전의 벽화와 단청의 원형 기록과 보존·관리를 위해 5월4일부터 12월29일까지 정밀 기록화 사업을 추진한다고 밝혔다.

기록화 사업은 ▲습기 ▲대기오염 ▲수리 ▲화재 등의 요인으로 인해 발생할 문화재 훼손 요소를 예방·파악하고 보존과 복원의 자료로 활용하기 위해 추진하게 됐다.
최종환 파주시장은 “보광사 대웅보전의 안과 밖을 장식한 벽화와 단청은 사찰과 함께 건물의 역사나, 성격, 장엄성을 파악할 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 문화유산이다” 며 “이번 기록화로 전각의 중요성과 가치를 재조명하고 체계적으로 보존ㆍ관리할 방안을 마련하겠다”고 밝혔다.
고령산 자락에 자리한 보광사는 영조의 어머니인 숙빈최씨(淑嬪崔氏)의 묘소인 소령원의 원찰(願刹)이자 오랫동안 조선 왕실과 밀접한 관계가 있었던 사찰로 잘 알려져 있다.
경내에서 가장 중심 전각이 되는 대웅보전은 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸의 팔작지붕 건물로 화려한 공포와 섬세한 조각 등 조선 후기를 대표하는 사찰 건축으로 손꼽힌다.
특히 건물의 내ㆍ외벽을 화려하게 장엄한 판벽화와 단청은 그 아름다움을 더하는 요소로 유명하다. 외벽에는 용선을 타고 극락정토로 향하는 <반야용선도>와 연꽃이 가득 피어있는 연못을 배경으로 불보살과 왕생자들이 연화화생하는 장면을 그린 <연화화생도>를 비롯해 <금강역사도>, <관음보살도> 등 불교의 다양한 주제와 아름다운 벽화들로 가득 차 있다. 파주=박정호기자
