삼국시대 백제의 섬진강유적 진출과정 및 후삼국기 후백제 도성 방어체제를 이해하는데 매우 중요한 유적으로 밝혀진 '월평리 산성(山城)'이 전라북도 기념물로 지정 예고됐다.

심 민 임실군수는 "국도 17번 도로의 성수면 구간에서 얼마 떨어지지 않고 높지 않아 접근성이 용이할 뿐만 아니라 잘 정비해 교육적으로 활용하는 등 향후 종합 정비계획 수립을 통해 추가적인 발굴은 물론 활용방안까지 검토할 계획"이라고 밝혔다.
