[브레이크뉴스=이성용기자] 창원특례시 홍남표 시장이 지역 경제활성화를 위한 첫 행보에 나섰다.
홍 시장은 8일 민선8기 출범 첫 기업체 방문일정으로 구자천 창원상의 회장과 LG전자 스마트파크를 방문했다.
홍 시장은 지난 1일 취임해 ‘동북아 중심도시 창원’이라는 비전을 제시하고 경제 활성화를 위한 혁신성장의 경제기반을 구축하겠다는 전략에 발맞춰, 취임 후 첫 기업체 방문지로 AI·빅데이터·디지털트윈·사물인터넷(IoT)·5G 통신 등 첨단 디지털 기술로 ‘지능형 공정 시스템’을 구축한 LG전자 스마트파크로 정했다.

LG 스마트파크는 국내 생활가전 생산 거점으로 혁신적인 제품과 차별화된 기술로 세계시장을 선도하는 프리미엄 가전제품을 생산하고 있으며, 지난 3월 국내 가전업계 중 처음으로 세계경제포럼(WEF, World Economy Forum)이 발표한 세계 제조업의 미래를 이끄는 ‘등대공장’으로 선정된 바 있다.
우리나라에서는 포스코와 LS일렉트릭에 이어 세 번째이다.
LG전자는 2017년부터 총 8천억원을 투자해 냉장고 생산라인을 지능형 자율공장으로 바꿨다.
생산성은 20% 향상됐고, 에너지 효율도 30%정도 개선됐다. 2025년 통합생산동이 최종 완공되면 연간 생산능력도 대폭 늘어날 예정이다.

이날 방문에서는 4차 산업혁명 시대를 열어갈 최첨단 스마트공장인 LG스마트파크에서 AI가 탑재된 로봇이 제품을 조립하고, 고공 컨베이어, 5세대(5G) 전용망 기반 물류로봇(AGV)이 실제 작동하는 생산라인을 직접 확인하며 설명을 듣는 시간을 가졌다.
홍남표 시장은 “LG전자 창원공장은 창원특례시 대표 기업으로 지역 경제에 버팀목이 되어 주고 있다”며 “4차 산업혁명 시대에 어두운 밤 바닷가에서 배들에게 길을 안내해주는 등대처럼 LG전자가 변화와 혁신을 통해 많은 협력사와 창원기업들과 상생하고, 지역일자리 창출에도 기여해 주기를 바란다”고 말했다.
