씨티칼리지 평생교육원(이하 씨티평생교육원)은 본원 교육생들이 유기견들에게 행복한 가정을 찾아주기 위한 보호소 트레이닝 봉사를 통해 사회참여 활동을 이어가고 있다고 21일 밝혔다.
이들은 고양시 소재 방치된 농장에서 구조된 개를 보호하는 봉사자 모임 ‘꽃길걷개’ 회원들과 함께 유기견 보호 활동에 참여하고 있다.
특히 전문적인 교육을 받은 본인들의 재능을 십분 발휘해 시설 청소, 산책과 식사 제공 등 개들의 생활을 보조하는 역할 뿐 아니라, 개들이 새로운 가정을 찾아 행복한 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 ‘보호소 트레이닝’까지 진행해 주고 있어 눈길을 끈다.

매년 발생하는 유기견은 보호소 신고 기준 10만 마리에 달하는데, 유기견 대부분은 몇 달을 넘기지 못하고 생을 마감하게 된다.
사람에 의존하며 살아온 개는 혼자 사는 게 거의 불가능하기 때문인데, 보호소에 들어간 개들도 일정 기간 입양이 되지 않으면 안락사로 생명을 잃게 된다.
이러한 개들을 살리기 위해 지정된 보호소 외에도 봉사자들이 모여 시설을 운영하며 개들의 입양을 돕는 역할을 하기도 한다.
문제는 어렵게 입양된 개들도 입질, 분리불안, 하울링 등 문제행동을 일으키면 다시 유기되거나 파양으로 이어지는 경우가 많다는 점이다.
개들이 좋은 가정으로 입양이 되려면 기본적인 사회화 교육이나 매너 교육을 받는 게 필요하다.
많은 봉사자들이 비용과 시간을 들여 개들을 구하기 위해 노력하더라도 개들의 문제행동을 저감하는 전문적인 트레이닝까지 할 수 있는 인원은 극소수에 달해 어려운 실정이다.
이에 씨티평생교육원 교육생들이 작은 손이나마 재능 기부를 통해 힘을 보태고 있는 것이다.
구비경 교육생은 “아직 배움이 부족하지만 전문가들에게 배운 내용을 토대로 개가 입양된 후 새로운 환경에 적응할 수 있도록 트레이닝을 하고 있다. 사람과 함께 사는 반려견들은 보호자와 교감이 잘 되지만, 유기견들은 열악한 환경에서 생활하다 보니 기본적으로 소통이 어렵다. 개가 어떤 걸 두려워하고 싫어하는지, 어떤 걸 좋아하는지 파악해서 입양 갈 때 도움 될 수 있도록 트레이닝 하고 있다”고 설명했다.
김가영 교육생은 “개는 위협적인 문제행동을 하지 않고 본능적인 달리기만 해도 보호자를 다치게 할 수 있다. 리쉬줄을 활용해 산책을 시켜주면서 급하게 달리지 않아도 된다는 인식을 심어주는 트레이닝을 하면 새로운 가족들을 만났을 때도 안전한 산책이 가능하게 된다. 이름을 부르면 보호자와 아이컨택을 할 수 있을 정도의 교감이 가능한 상태로도 교육을 진행한다”며 보호소 트레이닝의 중요성을 역설했다.
정민주 교육생은 “22시간 이상을 보호소 안에 갇혀 지내는 아이들을 위해 행동 풍부화를 도와주고 있다. 동물보호소같이 안정감을 주어야 하는 상황에서는 예상 가능한 상황을 만들어 줘야 하지만, 이 상태가 지속되면 지루해진다. 예상 가능한 것과 예측하기 어려운 것이 조화를 이뤄야 개의 일상이 풍요로워진다. 보호소의 아이들에게 음식과 장난감을 제공해 긍정적이고 생산적인 경험을 가큰에 함으로써 삶의 질을 높이기 위해 노력하고 있다”고 말했다.
한편 씨티평생교육원은 도시에서 엘리베이터 이용, 층간소음, 산책 공간 부재 등으로 스트레스를 받는 반려인과 반려견을 위해 실외 놀이와 교육이 어우러진 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.
반려견 운동장이 갖춰진 3만평의 넓은 정원에서 반려견과 함께 놀고, 배우고, 씻고(반려견) 갈 수 있는 반려견 아카데미 프로그램과 공간을 운영한다.
