경기 파주시 군내면 통일촌 마을회는 지난 21일 장단면사무소 광장에서 ‘통일촌 마을 조성 50주년 기념행사’가 성황리에 개최됐다고 밝혔다.
이날 행사에는 김경일 파주시장, 이성철 파주시의회 의장, 이갑영 북파주농협조합장, 서진하 1사단장, 통일촌 마을주민 등 300여 명이 참석해 자리를 빛냈다.

행사는 1부 기념행사와 2부 마을주민 화합의 장으로 실시됐으며, 1부 행사에서는 입주 가구 중 고인이 되신 분들을 위한 묵념을 시작으로 1세대 거주민 대상 선물 증정, 이완배 이장의 기념사, 김경일 파주시장의 축사, 1사단 군악대 연주 순으로 진행됐다.
2부 행사에서는 마을회에서 행사 참여자 및 주민들에게 오찬을 제공하고 이어서 마을주민 노래자랑을 통해 화합의 시간을 가졌다.
기념사에서 이완배 이장은 “제대군인과 실향민들이 지뢰밭을 개간하며 힘겹게 삶의 터전을 이뤄낸 만큼 마을에 대한 지속적인 관심과 지원을 부탁드린다”고 전했다.

김경일 파주시장은 “통일을 염원하는 마음으로 주민들이 통일촌에 뿌리 내린지 어느덧 반세기가 지났다”며 “분단의 현장에 있지만 평화와 번영을 상징하는 통일촌이 앞으로도 희망찬 미래를 이어갈 수 있도록 파주시도 지원하겠다”고 말했다.
파주시 군내면 백연리 소재의 ‘통일촌 마을’은 1972년 민통선 북방종합개발 정책에 따라 조성된 전략적 새마을 농촌 마을로, 1973년 8월 21일에 1사단 제대 장병 40가구, 실향민 40가구, 학교, 교회, 보건소 종사자 4가구 등 총 84가구의 348명이 입주해 조성된 마을이다.
