이번 행사는 한반도의 동·서를 잇는 최장 숲길인 동서트레일의 시작을 알림과 동시에 성공적인 추진과 동력확보를 위해 마련됐다.
행사가 열린 망양정은 조선 최대 문호였던 송강 정철 선생이 관동팔경 중 제일경으로꼽은 바 있어 동서트레일 시작점에서의 착수행사 의미를 더욱 빛나게 했다.
특히, 이번 착수행사 후 시작하는 동서트레일 시범구간인 망양정~수곡리~하원리까지 16.7km노선은 지난 3월 울진대형산불로 큰 피해를 입은 지역을 위해 우리금융그룹이 출연한 ESG기금 8억 원이 사용된다.
시범 구간은 내년 4월 개통 예정이고 하원리, 소광리, 전곡리 구간은 순차적으로 조성해 2026년까지 울진군 통과노선 총 56km을 마무리 한다는 계획이다.
한편, 동서트레일은 울진에서 충남 태안군까지 55개구간, 849km를 연결하는숲길로서 5개광역 자치단체 21개 시군을 지나게 된다. 착수식을 시작으로 2026년까지 604억원이 투입되며 거점 마을과 야영장, 거점 쉼터, 안내판 등편의시설이 설치될 예정이다.
