브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 최근 중국이 날린 '정찰 풍선'이 미국 핵미사일 기지 등 주요 지역을 관측한 가운데 북한이 날린 것으로 추정되는 풍선도 한 때 우리 영공을 넘은 것으로 확인됐다.
6일 KBS는 군 고위 관계자의 말을 인용, 어제(5일) 오후 6시30분경 경기도 연천 최전방 지역에서 북한이 날린 것으로 추정되는 2m 크기의 풍선이 포착됐다고 보도했다.
이 풍선은 연천군 지역 전방 부대의 열영상감시장비(TOD) 관측병이 최초 발견했다. 풍선은 지상감시용인 열상탐지장비(TOD)로 충분히 관측이 될 정도로 낮게 비행한 것으로 전해졌다.
풍선은 바람을 타고 동쪽으로 이동, 동부전선 전방 부대에서도 관측했다는 보고가 올라왔으며 발견한지 수시간이 지나 동해로 빠져 나갔다.
최근 북한 무인기 영공 침범 사건으로 놀란 군은 이 내용을 즉각 합동참모본부까지 상황 보고한 것으로 전해졌다.
하지만 합참은 해당 풍선이 '적대적 성격'을 띤 것은 아니라고 분석하고, 대공 상황 감시 강화 지침만 내렸다.
합참 관계자는 "우리나라나 해외에서도 기상 관측용 풍선을 종종 날려 보내곤 한다"면서 "과거 사례 등 여러 가지를 고려해 판단했을 때 기상관측용 풍선으로 파악된다"고 설명했다.

The balloon was first discovered by a TOD observer at a front unit in Yeoncheon County. The balloon is said to have flown low enough to be observed with TOD equipment for ground monitoring.

The military, surprised by the recent invasion of North Korean drone airspace, reportedly immediately reported the situation to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
