한국자유총연맹(총재 강석호, 이하 연맹)은 4월 14일자 보도자료에서 “이날 오후 4시, 서울 종로구 동화면세점 앞에서 각계 관계자와 시민, 학생 등 200여 명이 참석한 가운데 ‘북한인권’을 주제로 자유민주주의와 국가안보 대국민 토론회를 개최했다.”고 전하고 “이날 토론회에는 신동혁 사무총장의 인사말, 강철환 북한전략센터 대표의 주제발표, 질의응답, 시민발언 등의 순으로 진행됐다”고 알렸다.
이날 강철환 북한전략센터 대표는 주제발표에서 “최근 정부가 공개한 북한인권보고서에 따르면 북한 내에서 조직적이고 광범위하게 중대한 인권침해가 이뤄지고 있다”고 밝히고 “더이상 북한의 거센 반발과 탈북민 신상 보호를 이유로 북한인권을 수수방관해서는 안된다”고 강조했다. 남광규 매봉통일연구소 소장은 시민발언을 통해 “김정은 정권은 국제평화를 위협하는 핵과 미사일 실험을 즉시 중단하고 북한 주민의 인권향상에 즉시 나서야 할 것”이라고 주장했다.
매주 시의성 있는 주제를 선정, 자유민주주의와 국가 안보 대국민 토론회를 개최하는 한국자유총연맹은 1954년에 출범했다. 지난 69년간 자유민주주의 수호·발전 및 자유민주적 기본질서에 입각한 자유평화통일을 추구하기 위해 다양한 활동을 전개해 왔다. 연맹은 지난 2002년 UN 경제사회이사회의 특별협의 지위를 부여받은 국제 NGO로서, 국내 최대 규모의 국민운동단체이다.
