정대철(79) 전 민주당 대표-현 헌정회장(전직 9,10,13,14,16대 의원)은 5선의 전 국회의원. 정대철 회장은 이날 본지와 가진 단독 인터뷰에서 “여야가 한 발짝씩(아니 반 발짝이라도) 물러나서 상대방을 이해하고 서로 다름을 인정하려는 태도와 화해⋅포용⋅상생과 협치의 정치를 권면하고 싶다. 민주당의 옛날 동지들(나는 탈당, 특별히 운동권 출신 정치인들)에게 이런 충고를 드리고 싶다. 균형 있는 감각으로 세상을 내려다보시길 권면하고 싶다. 예컨대 우리나라 민주화를 위해서는 김대중 대통령의 노력을 높이 사는 반면, 우리나라 경제 발전에 박정희 대통령의 공로도 인정해야 한다는 것이다. 양면성을 다 인정하시길 바란다.”면서 “국정 최고 지도자인 대통령의 역할이 더욱 절실히 필요해 보인다. 정치의 궁극적 책임은 대통령에게 돌아가기 마련이다. 어떤 결과든 최고 통치자인 대통령이 총책임을 져야 하기 때문이다. 대통령이 좀 더 적극적이고 능동적으로 나왔으면 한다. 무엇보다도 여소야대 상황 하에서 야당지도자⋅야당국회의원⋅시민지도자들을 만나서 경청하고 허심탄회하게 설득, 타협하여야 한다. 개헌(제왕적 대통령제 개헌)과 선거법 개정(승자독식으로 국민을 대변하는 대표의 비례성이 무너진)이 가장 큰 정치 개혁이며 이를 위해서 정치인, 뜻있는 사람들의 노력이 필요하다.”라고 강조했다.
