[브레이크뉴스=양영석 기자] 함안군은 이달 13일부터 오는 8월 31일까지 국립세종수목원 한국전통정원 내 궁궐정원에서 ‘700년 아라홍련, 세종에 피다’라는 주제로 함안연꽃 특별전시를 개최한다.
이번 특별전은 국립세종수목원이 K-정원문화 가치 증진을 위해 기획한 것으로 함안군의 보물 꽃인 ‘아라홍련’과 토종 연꽃 ‘법수홍련’이 올 여름 궁궐정원의 주인공이 되어 아름다움을 뽐낼 예정이다.
아라홍련은 2009년 함안성산산성 연못터 발굴 당시 수습된 연꽃 씨앗을 꽃 피워낸 것으로 방사성 탄소연대 측정결과 약 700여 년 전의 고려시대 연꽃으로 밝혀졌다.
오늘날의 연꽃보다 꽃잎 수가 적고 색상이 은은해 마치 고려시대 탱화 속 연꽃을 떠오르게 한다.
함안군 법수면 옥수늪에서 자생한 법수홍련은 경주 안압지의 연과 유전자가 동일한 신라시대 연꽃으로 경복궁 경회루와 통도사 연못에서도 만나볼 수 있다.
함안군은 700여 년을 땅속에 묻혀있다 긴 잠에서 깨어난 아라홍련을 상표로 등록·관리 해오고 있으며 종자 보존을 위해 국립백두대간수목원 내 종자영구 저장시설인 시드볼트에 종자를 기탁한 바 있다.
조근제 군수는 지난 14일 국립세종수목원에서 열린 제17회 시장·군수·구청장 산림연찬회에 참석한 후 궁궐정원과 솔찬루 등을 돌아보며 함안의 연꽃 알리기에 나섰다.
조 군수는 “아라홍련이 함안을 벗어나 외부에서 소개된 것은 아라홍련 개화 이래 처음있는 일”이라며 “국립세종수목원에서의 전시를 통해 그 가치가 더해지고 전국에 알려지는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
한편 8월 말 까지 궁궐정원 솔찬루에서는 ‘함안 연꽃테마파크 연꽃사진 공모전’ 수상작 17점이 전시되며 사계절 전시온실 로비에서는 ‘함안 말이산고분군 세계유산 등재 기원 사진전’이 7월 9일까지 개최된다.
