공단은 21일 일본 JAEA 본사에서 열린 제5차 KORAD-JAEA 정기 협력회의에서 JAEA는 경주 중저준위 방폐장 부지확보 절차, 1단계 동굴 처분시설 처분방식 선정과정, 부지선정 기술 기준과 이를 준수하기 위한 노하우 등을 전수해 줄 것을 공단에 요청했다고 밝혔다.
공단은 이날 중저준위 방폐장 부지선정 절차, 1단계 동굴 처분시설 처분방식 및 처분부지 선정과정, 2단계 표층 처분시설 추진현황 등을 일본 측에 설명했다. JAEA는 극저준위 방폐물 인수기준 등을 공유했다.
JAEA는 일본의 원자력연구개발기구로 연구용 원자로와 의료ㆍ산업용방사성폐기물 처분을 위한 표층ㆍ매립형 처분시설 건설을 추진하면서 공단에 협조를 요청했다.
일본이 경주 중저준위 방폐장 부지확보 과정 등에 대한 노하우 전수를 요청한 것은 경주 중저준위 방폐장의 안전성과 수용성 확보 경험 등을 세계적으로 다시 한번 인정받은 것으로 평가받고 있다.
경주 방폐장 1단계 동굴처분시설은 지난 2015년 터널 및 지하공간 토목공사 분야에서 세계 최고의 권위를 가진 ITA 어워즈에서 올해의 터널 프로젝트상을 수상하는 등 세계적으로 안전성과 기술력을 인정받았다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은“중저준위 방폐장 건설과 운영과정에서 쌓은 노하우를 전세계 방폐장 운영국들과 함께 공유하면서 국가적 과제인 고준위 방폐장 부지 확보를 차질 없이 추진해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
