[브레이크뉴스=양영석 기자] 아라가야의 찬란한 600년 역사를 상징하는 보고 함안의 말이산 고분군이 대한민국의 16번째 세계유산으로 등재될 전망이다.
조근제 함안군수를 비롯한 함안군 대표단은 말이산 고분군의 세계유산 등재 최종 결정을 앞두고 15일 제45차 세계유산위원회 참석을 위해 사우디아라비아 리야드로 출국한다.
대표단은 오는 17일부터 19일까지 21개 세계유산위원국 대표단이 참석하는 세계유산 등재 심사 과정을 참관하고 말이산 고분군의 세계유산적 가치를 국제사회에 홍보할 계획이다.
말이산 고분군 등 7개의 연속유산으로 구성된 ‘가야고분군’은 당초 2022년 6월 세계유산위원회에서 세계유산 등재 여부가 결정될 예정이었으나, 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁으로 당시 의장국이었던 러시아가 세계유산위원회 개최를 잠정연기 통보하면서 등재 발표가 미뤄졌다.
2023년 러시아가 의장국 지위를 사퇴하고 사우디아라비아가 후임 의장국으로 결정되면서 올해 리야드에서 열리는 제45차 세계유산위원회에서 가야고분군의 세계유산 등재 여부가 최종 결정될 예정이다.
이와 관련해 지난 5월 유네스코 자문기구인 국제기념물유적협의회는 유네스코 본부에 말이산 고분군을 비롯한 ‘가야고분군’에 대한 세계유산 ‘등재 권고’ 의견을 전달했다.
세계유산위원회에서 문화유산은 국제기념물유적협의회, 자연유산은 세계자연보전연맹의 평가 결과를 바탕으로 세계유산 등재 여부를 결정한다.
평가는 등재 신청서 검토와 전문가 현지 조사로 이뤄지며 이를 바탕으로 ‘등재 권고’와 ‘보류’, ‘반려’, ‘등재 불가’의 평가 결과를 유네스코 세계유산위원회로 제출하게 된다.
지금까지의 사례를 볼 때 자문기구로부터 ‘등재 권고’를 받은 유산은 극히 예외적인 경우를 제외하고는 그대로 등재가 이루어져 왔다.
이변이 없는 한 지난 2013년부터 시작된 말이산 고분군의 세계유산 등재 추진은 대한민국의 16번째 세계유산이라는 값진 결실을 맺을 것으로 예상된다.
조근제 군수는 “말이산 고분군의 세계유산 등재는 우리 함안의 문화유산이 국가와 민족을 넘어 전 인류가 공동으로 보호해야 할 가치가 있는 중요한 유산으로 인정받는 일”이라며 “말이산 고분군의 경관 보존과 주변 관광수요 증가에 대비한 인프라 구축 등 연계사업을 차질 없이 준비해 세계유산 등재가 함안 발전의 원동력이자 시발점이 될 수 있도록 후속 조치에 모든 역량을 집중하겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 말이산 고분군을 비롯한 ‘가야고분군’은 50건의 세계유산 등재후보 목록 중 12번째 심사 순서를 배정받았으며 현지 시간으로 17일 오후에 심사가 진행될 것으로 예상된다.
