6일 영덕군에 따르면 이날 경매에는 근해대게자망어선 3척이 참가했으며, 마리 당 최고가는 14만 2,000원, 총 위판액은 1억 5,400만 원을 기록했다.
이번 위판을 시작으로 영덕군 일대는 대게잡이 어선이 본격적인 조업에 나서게 되며, 대게 판매장과 식당들이 밀집해 있는 강구대게거리와 축산항 일대도 몰려드는 인파로 분주해질 것으로 보인다.
영덕지역의 대게 조업은 11월 근해에서 시작해 12월에는 연안까지 점차 확대해 나가며, 다음 해 5월까지 이뤄진다.
이날 경매 현장을 찾은 김광열 영덕군수는 김성식 강구수협장 등과 함께 어업인, 강구대게거리 상인, 중매인 등을 격려하고 영덕대게를 포함한 수산업 활성화에 대한 의견을 나눴다.
영덕대게는 지난 4월 ‘대한민국 대표 브랜드 대상’ 수산물 부문에서 대상을 받은 것을 포함해 총 10회에 걸쳐 브랜드 대상을 받은 독보적인 가치를 갖고 있는 대한민국 최고의 특산물로 이름나 있다.
이는 영덕지역의 청정 바다에서 흙이 전혀 없는 깨끗한 모래에서만 서식하기에 그 맛이 탁월하고 껍질이 얇아 살이 실한 특성 때문으로, 고려를 개국한 태조 왕건을 비롯해 예로부터 임금님께 진상된 명물로 널리 알려져 있다.
