The political reality of Yangju City ‘A dog with poop scolds a dog with bran on it’
Both the Democratic Party and the National Power Party must apologize to citizens for the Okjeong Logistics Complex incident.
[Reporter's Notebook] Break News Yangju Reporter Kim Wan-young = April 10, 2024 is the date of the 22nd National Assembly election. There are exactly 5 months left.
Ahead of the general election, a full-scale battle for energy has begun in Yangju.
First, those who attacked were Yangju city and provincial council members belonging to the Democratic Party of Korea. They issued a statement under their joint name on October 27th, demanding that the warehouse construction be stopped immediately, saying, “The logistics warehouse operator in the Okjeong district is attempting to start construction under false pretenses.”
In addition, he said, “We have been opposing it because we are concerned about the worsening living environment due to extreme traffic congestion, noise, and flying dust, and the negative impact it will have on the safety and health of children,” and added, “We will fight to the end to block the warehouse.”
The statement reads, “We will work with citizens to block the construction of a logistics warehouse. We strongly condemn the Yangju market that caused the current situation. “I was elected mayor with a pledge to ‘cancel ex officio the construction of a logistics warehouse,’” he said.
He went one step further and took responsibility, saying, “Mayor Kang is the party responsible for this situation as the director in charge at the time when the traffic impact assessment, a key procedure for building the warehouse, was passed.”
However, the facts are like this
The mayor of Yangju is responsible for all administration. If a public official of that subordinate agency makes a mistake, he or she may be subject to disciplinary action.
The construction permit for the logistics warehouse in the Okjeong residential area is September 9, 2021 for site 1 and March 31, 2022 for site 2. In other words, the cause was provided by granting building permits during the time of former Mayor Lee Seong-ho, a member of the Democratic Party.
As you all know, former mayor Lee Seong-ho of the Democratic Party, who was elected as the 7th mayor of Yangju, was barely able to serve as mayor for four years due to illness. In short, they are ignoring responsible politics.
He resigned at the last minute on March 24, 2022, about 100 days before his 8th popularly elected term. In fact, citizens and organizations have been protesting for the mayor's resignation, but Yangju Mayor Lee Seong-ho did not even flinch. Meanwhile, the fact is that the construction permit for the Okjeong warehouse was granted by a mayor belonging to the Democratic Party.
However, Mayor Kang Soo-hyun's pledge included ex officio cancellation of the permit. And after he was elected, he was too quick to break his pledge to cancel the permit. The People Power Party and politicians should be judged by the citizens for not keeping their promises.
But the saying, ‘A dog with shit on it scolds a dog with bran on it,’ came to mind again.
If the mayor of the Democratic Party had granted the building permit but had not held it, there would not have been any burden on the current mayor. Looking at the statement, I feel like the citizens of Yangju are being ignored. No matter how close the general election is, there is a duty of politics.
Regarding this logistics complex matter, Yangju City's party association, the National Power Party and the Democratic Party, should have nothing to say. Yangju citizen voters will have to make the right decision in the 22nd general election in a political reality where people point fingers at each other for being wrong even though they should apologize to the citizens.
Moreover, the Gyeonggi Provincial Democratic Party of Korea recently reported the incident of the mayor giving small money envelopes to city council members while they were leaving for an overseas training trip to the Yangju City Council, which was reported to the prosecution under the Public Official Election Act and is being investigated by the Yangju Police Station.
As the general election slowly approaches, it is expected that the number of complaints will continue in the Yangju city government.
It is expected that the decision to nominate the People Power Party candidate will also be made depending on whether 4th-term Democratic Party lawmaker Jeong Seong-ho is nominated.
Yangju city officials are also talking about variables regarding the recent announcement by the Inyohan National Power Innovation Committee that Yun Haek-gwan can run for office in the metropolitan area and in rough areas.
