브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조 바이든 미국 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 오는 15일(현지시간) 미국 샌프란시스코에서 정상회담을 갖는다.
양국은 이번 만남을 통해 군사 대화 채널의 일부 복원에 대해 합의할 것이라고 일본 교도통신은 미중 관계 소식통의 말을 인용해 보도했다.
미·중 정상회담 개최는 지난해 11월 인도네시아 발리섬에서 열린 뒤 이번이 처음이다. 이번 만남은 시진핑 주석이 14~17일 샌프란시스코에서 진행 중인 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 회의 참석차 미국을 방문하는 것을 계기로 이뤄졌다.
미국과 중국의 국방 대화는 지난해 8월 당시 낸시 펠로시 미국 하원의장의 대만 방문 이후 중단된 상태이다. 이에 바이든 대통령은 이번 정상회담을 통해 실무자급을 포함한 군사 의사소통 재개를 요구할 것으로 전해졌으며 중국 역시 이에 긍정적인 의사를 밝혔다.
바이든 대통령은 양국간 군사적 긴장도가 높아짐에 따라 발생할 수 있는 우방적 충돌에 대해 우려하고 있으며 이를 해결하기 위한 군사 소통이 중요하다고 보고 중국에 요청해온 것으로 알려졌다.
전날 뉴욕타임스 보도에 따르면 제이크 설리번 백악관 안보보좌관은 브리핑에서 "우리는 미중관계의 가장 기본적인 요소 중 일부를 논의할 것으로 예상되며 여기에는 열린 소통 채널 강화와 책임있는 경쟁 관리로 군사적 충돌을 막는 것이 포함될 것"이라고 설명했다.
중국 공산당 기관지인 환구시보는 지난 12일 보도에서 "1년 만에 열리는 대면 정상회담에 양측의 전략적 의도를 서로 이해하고, 차이가 갈등으로 발전하는 것을 막는 데 도움이 될 것"이라며 "중국은 소통과 조율을 강화해 미국 측이 미중관계에 대해 보다 객관적인 시각과 판단을 가질 수 있기를 희망한다"고 보도했다. 그러면서 "미국 측이 기대하는 군 간 통신 재개도 그 목록에 포함될 수 있다"고 덧붙였다.
