전북 익산에 소재하는 'W미술관(관장 신주연)'은 11월30일자 보도자료에서 “W미술관(관장 신주연)은 12월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 《제3회 W미술상 선정작가 이중희 전(展)》을 개최한다”고 밝혔다.
이 자료에서 “W미술상은 전북 익산 문화예술계의 지속과 발전을 위해 공헌한 예술인들을 지지하고, 이들의 업적을 알리기 위하여 2021년 처음 제정하여 올해로 3회를 맞았다. 익산의 유일한 사립미술관으로서 지역 예술인들의 작품을 선보일 수 있는 전시를 마련하여 작가와 시민들이 문화적인 연대를 형성할 수 있도록 많은 자문과 자체 회의를 거쳐 기획하게 됐다”고 설명하고 ”작가 선정 과정에 있어 W미술관장과 지역 예술인 및 문화예술 분야 기자로 구성된 운영위원회 회의를 통해 지역 미술계에 헌신하며 지속적인 작업 활동을 이어온 작가를 추천받아 ‘찾아주는 상’으로 진행했다“고 전했다.
이어 “여러 후보군 중 만다라, 단청 등 한국적인 거센 에너지와 형상을 담아낸 작품을 전개하여 국내외에서 활발한 작업을 이어온 이중희 작가를 최종적으로 선정했다. 작가는 1985년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 약 40년 동안 오방색을 중심으로 강렬한 기운을 내포한 작품들을 전개하였던 것에서 변모하여 근래에 들어 사실성을 바탕으로 한 밀도 높은 풍경화 및 정물화 등의 새로운 작품세계를 구축했다”고 강조하고 “ 《제3회 W미술상 선정작가 이중희 전(展)》에서는 자연에 대한 깊은 감수성으로 본연의 어떠한 것에 몰두하여 깊이 있는 묘사를 함으로써 작가의 영적 세계와 내면이 드러난 작품들을 감상할 수 있다. 작가의 화실인 어은당과 사생을 하며 마주한 순간순간의 장면들을 누군가의 구상에서는 볼 수 없었던 ‘어은당 인상주의’로 전혀 새롭게 선보이고자 한다. 새로운 시각과 느낌으로 자연을 바라보는 이 시대의 새로운 인상주의를 통해 인간 본성에서 느껴지는 자연친화적이고 마음이 동하는 어떠한 것들에 대한 고찰을 이끌어 낸다”고 소개했다.

W미술관측은 “이중희 작가에게 자연은 작업의 소재도 되지만 모든 감정을 불러일으키는 원천이 된다. 풍경을 화폭에 담는 단계에서 대상에 대한 개념화보다는 정확한 묘사와 깊이 있는 중첩으로 사실성에 중점을 둔다. 작가의 첫 개인전 리플렛에는 ‘나는 가고 싶은 곳은 어디나 간다. 떠나기도 하고 돌아오기도 한다.’라는 문장이 있다. 특히 ‘돌아왔다’는 말의 의미는 새로운 시도이자 나만의 어떠한 것, 나의 본래의 것, 나의 속 깊이에 들어가는 것이라고 한다. 또한 당시 작업 활동에 임함에 있어 과도기에 있다고 언급했으며 지금도 그 연장선상에 있다고 본다. 이번 전시는 “알려진 나의 그림과 상당히 다르게 보이는 이 그림들도 또 다른 나의 참모습이다. 옷을 달리 입었을 뿐 나 그대로의 모습, 돌아온 모습이기도 하다.”라는 작가의 말과 같이 그간 보지 못했던 이중희 작가의 전환점을 이루는 자리가 될 것“이라고 설명했다.
W미술관의 신주연 관장은 “지역 미술계의 부흥과 확산을 위해 익산 예술인들과 상생하고 함께 호흡하는 하나의 방법으로 W미술상을 지속하고 있다. 매년 미술상을 진행하면서 치열한 예술가로서의 삶을 살아온 지역 작가들을 반드시 조명해야 한다는 사명으로 임하고 있다. W미술관이 유지되고 익산의 문화예술이 발전하고 있는 것은 수많은 지역 예술인들의 노고가 있었음을 알기에 작업을 계속할 수 있는 원동력이 되도록 든든한 버팀목 역할을 수행하고자 한다.”라고 밝혔다.
이 전시는 12월 1일 오픈, 12월 31일(일)까지 진행된다. 12월 1일 시작 일에 맞추어 오후 4시에 개막식과 함께 수상 작가에게 상패와 상금 500만 원을 시상할 예정. 전시 관람은 무료이며, 매주 월요일을 제외한 모든 요일 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 가능하다.
