【브레이크뉴스 포항】박희경 기자=에코프로는 리튬, 니켈 등 이차전지 소재 생산에 필요한 핵심 자원확보에 속도를 내기 위해 지주사 내에 글로벌자원실을 신설하고 선제적 해외 투자에 나선다고 9일 밝혔다.

이는 기존에 투자해 온 인도네시아뿐만 아니라 자원 선진국 호주 등에서 투자를 강화한다는 전략이다.
에코프로는 지난해 3월 주주총회에서 ‘국내외 자원의 탐사 채취 개발사업’을 사업목적에 추가하는 정관 변경안을 의결하는 등 자원투자 사업을 강화해 왔다.
지주사인 에코프로가 직속으로 글로벌자원실을 신설한 이유로 광물확보는 투자비가 크고, 위험 부담이 높은 만큼 장기적이면서 전문적인투자 계획이 필요하기 때문으로 풀이된다.
특히 지주사 에코프로가 글로벌자원실을 신설한 것은 ‘사업 지주회사’로서 장기 플랜을 본격 가동하기 위한 포석으로 해석된다.
에코프로는 국내 굴지의 대기업 종합상사에서 자원 개발에 잔뼈가굵은 핵심인력을 임원으로 영입해 글로벌자원실장을 맡긴 것으로 알려졌다.
글로벌자원실은 광산 지분 투자, 장기 공급 계약 등을 통한 니켈과리튬 등 핵심 광물 확보에 적극 나설 계획이다. 나아가 해외 제련소,광산 투자를 위한 해외 업체와의 제휴도 추진한다는 복안이다.
◇ 해외 제련소 투자 강화해 니켈 확보 총력
니켈은 이차전지 소재 제조에서 핵심적인 광물이다. 양극재는 이차전지의 성능 및 가격을 결정하는 중요한 소재인데 니켈은 양극재의에너지 밀도를 높이는 핵심 기능을 담당한다. 이 때문에 안정적인 니
켈 확보는 이차전지 사업 경쟁력을 좌우하는 요인으로 꼽힌다.
에코프로는 해외 현지 제련소 투자를 통해 니켈 확보에 적극 나서고 있다. 에코프로는 2022년 초 중국 GEM이 인도네시아에서 운영 중인 니켈 제련소 QMB의 지분 9%를 취득한 바 있다. 이에 따라 연간
6000톤의 니켈 중간재, MHP(Mixed hydroxide Precipitate)를 확보했다.
에코프로는 지난해 11월에는 QMB의 생산능력을 니켈 금속 기준기존 3만 톤에서 5만 톤으로 증량하는 확장사업에도 참여했다. 이를 통해 MHP 확보 물량도 늘어날 것으로 전망된다. 에코프로는 앞으로
도 인도네시아 내 니켈 제련소 사업을 지속 확장해 나갈 예정이다.
MHP는 니켈 금속보다 가격이 저렴할 뿐 아니라 삼원계 전구체 생산에 필요한 코발트도 함유하고 있어 에코프로머티리얼즈의 전구체사업 경쟁력 강화에도 도움이 될 것으로 전망된다.
◇’백색황금’ 리튬 개발에도 속도
리튬은 가장 가벼운 원소로 전기차, 휴대폰, 컴퓨터 등 모든 종류의배터리에 필수적으로 활용되는 핵심소재다. 필수 금속이다 보니 '하얀석유', '백색황금'으로 불리는데 이차전지에서 리튬은 전기를 생성, 충전하는 핵심적인 역할을 한다.
리튬 사업의 핵심은 질 좋은 광물을 보유한 원광을 얼마나 확보하느냐에 달려 있다. 에코프로는 광산업이 발달한 호주에서 활동하는 글로벌 리튬 기업과의 협업 기회를 타진하는 한편, 아프리카 등 리튬 부
존이 새롭게 확인된 지역을 중심으로 광산 참여 기회를 검토할 예정이다. 또 역량이 검증된 글로벌 트레이더 혹은 이차전지 밸류 체인 내다른 업체와 공동 투자하는 방안도 추진할 계획이다.
에코프로 가족사인 에코프로이노베이션은 미국 네바다주에서 리튬광산 공동 개발에 나섰고, 에코프로씨엔지에선 폐배터리에서 리튬을 추출하는 등 리튬 자체 확보 비중도 늘려가는 노력을 병행하고 있다.
에코프로 관계자는 “에코프로는 앞으로도 배터리 원료 분야 전문성 강화와 적극적인 해외 프로젝트 발굴을 통해 그룹의 지속 성장을 위한 글로벌 원자재 공급망 구축에 더욱 박차를 가할 방침”이라고 말했
