브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= SBS가 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’ 중계권 협상 결렬 관련해 입장을 밝혔다.
SBS는 22일 입장문을 내고 “JTBC가 언론을 통해 월드컵 중계권료 협상 결렬을 선언함에 따라 부득이하게 중계에 참여하지 못하게 됐다. 개국 이후 단 한 차례도 빠짐없이 월드컵을 중계해온 SBS로서는 매우 안타까운 일이다”고 전했다.
이어 “SBS는 지상파 방송사로서 공적 책무를 다하고, 시청자 기대에 부응하기 위해 일정 부분의 손실은 감수하겠다는 의지로 협상에 임했다. 그 과정에서 당초 금액보다 20% 인상한 안을 제시하며 마지막까지 협상 타결을 위해 최선의 노력을 다했다”고 말했다.
또 “그러나 JTBC로부터 제안 받은 중계권은 여러 차례 지적됐듯이 디지털 권리에 논쟁적 이슈가 있었던 데다, 금액 또한 회사의 재무 건전성과 주주 가치에 중대한 부담을 초래할 수 있는 수준이었다”며 “지상파 방송사로서의 공적 책무는 중요한 가치지만, 동시에 상장된 주식회사로서 지속 가능한 경영 기반 위에서 그 역할을 수행해야 한다는 점 역시 외면할 수 없었다”고 밝혔다.
마지막으로 “앞으로 SBS는 월드컵과 올림픽 등 주요 스포츠 중계와 관련해, 공적 책무와 병행해 달라진 시대, 달라진 미디어 환경에 맞는 새로운 합리적 제도를 만들기 위해 함께 고민하고 공동 협력할 것이다”고 덧붙였다.
