영화학자 김성태 박사가 '영화의 역사'라는 신간을 출간(출판사=불란서책방)했다. 이 책은 출간 이후 한국 출판문화산업진흥원 중소출판사 출판콘텐츠 창작 지원 선정작이 됐다.
저자는 이 책의 서문에서 “프랑스에서 영화를 공부하며 깨달은 것은 서구가 사고하는 방식, 행동하는 방식이었다. 그렇게 12년을 살다가 한국으로 돌아왔고 20여 년을 강단에 서고 말을 했고 글을 썼다. 그러다 깨달았다. 잘못하면 우리는 서구의 지식을 해석하고 그에 대해 말하는 꾀꼬리에 지나지 않을지도 모른다. 나는 그러고 싶지 않았다. 그들의 지식을 습득하고 ‘내’가 세상을 바라보는 방식, 세상에 관한 생각을 지니려고 시작한 것이지 그들의 지식을 해석하는 데 급급해하려고 시작한 게 아니었다. 지식을 습득하는 이유는 지혜롭게 살려는 목적 외에 이렇다 할 목적이 없다. 이제 우리가 세상을 어떻게 본다고 이야기할 때가 되었다. 영화사를 그저 읽고 메모하고 외우는 게 아니라 생각하고 판단하고 새로 인식하는 것. 남들의 학문이 아니라 지금 여기서 우리가 얻은 것들로 우리의 말을 하는 것. 푸코 전문가가 되기 위해 공부하는 게 아니라 내가 세상을 사유하기 위해 공부하는 것처럼”이라고 피력했다.
출판사 측은 이 책을 소개하면서 “19세기 말, 영화가 나타나는 시기부터 유성영화가 등장하던 1927년까지의 영화의 역사를 다룬다. 세계가 급격한 변화를 맞이하던 때, 영화가 태어날 수 있던 조건들을 역사적 배경과 지적, 예술적 흐름, 과학 문명의 발달을 통해 살펴보고 유성영화가 등장하기 전까지의 질풍노도의 시기를 다룬다. 그렇다고 오랜 과거, 무성영화 시대에 대한 역사적 조망은 결코 아니다. 당시 인류에게 영화는 무성이었다. 오히려 소리가 덧붙여진 영화를 유성영화로 따로 구분했다. 그러니까 이 책에서 다루는 것은 무성영화의 역사가 아니라, 인류에게 나타난 ‘영화’라는 도구의 정체이다. 1920년대 첫 번째 전성기를 맞이한 ‘영화’의 삶을 추적하며 인류에게 개념으로 확립된 ‘영화’, 오늘날 영화의 개념과 다르지 않은 ‘영화’를 캐는 작업이다. 이는 현재 우리가 보고 즐기는 ‘영화’의 의미를 진지하게 찾아보는 탐색일 것”이라면서 “영화학자 김성태가 새롭게 쓴 세계영화사 <영화의 역사>는 영화의 역사적 사실만을 학습하는 것이 아니라, 기존의 영화사를 뒤집어 새롭게 읽어내며 영화에 대한 시선을 확장하고. 기존의 영화사가 왜 그렇게 쓰여야 했는지를 이해함으로써 자신만의 영화사를 구축해나가도록 돕는다”고 설명했다.
이어 “이제까지 영화사는 새로운 매체에 관심을 지닌 지식인들의 관점에서 쓴 영화사, 유럽의 영화를 사유의 영화라는 기준에서 사조 중심으로 기술하거나, 할리우드를 산업과 상업적인 기준에 따라 기술한다. 예술적 고민의 흔적을 찾아내 그에 충실한 영화미학을 입증하거나 혹은 상업적 성공 안에서 자신의 ‘스타일’을 갖춘 감독과 작품을 골라내어 평가한다. 어디를 봐도 '영화'의 특수성은 언급되지 않는다. 대부분 ‘이야기’를 담고 있는 작품들로 채운다. 지금까지의 영화사는 잘 만든 영화의 기록들이었다”면서 “이런 시선이 오늘날 예술영화와 상업영화를 가르는 터무니없는 미적 기준을 낳았고, 현대 영화산업의 기형적 성장을 초래한 이유 중 하나가 되었다. 예술로서의 영화를 주장하는 쪽과 거대한 산업적 효과를 노리는 쪽의 은근한 대립, 바로 우리 대중들의 의식 속의 기묘한 갈등이 그것의 결과라 하겠다”고 강조했다,
또한 “‘영화’는 태어날 때부터 세상을 스크린 위에 있는 그대로 ‘보여주는 것’으로 출발했다. 영화는 상상해야만 이미지로 떠오르는 세계, 상상해야만 움직이는 세계가 아니라, 눈앞에서 움직이고 살아 있는 세계를 보여주는 것이기에 새롭게 쓰는 영화사는 ‘어떤 영화가 좋은 영화다’를 분별하는 것이 아니라 영화를 이해하고 더 ‘잘’ 보게 하는 근거들을 살펴보는 데 초점을 맞추었다”고 덧붙였다.
이창동 영화감독은 이 책의 추천사에서 “'영화의 역사'를 이렇게 넓고 깊게, 이처럼 다층적인 시각으로 서술한 책은 한국은 물론이고 저자 자신이 공부한, 영화를 발명했던 프랑스에서도 찾아보기 어렵다. 그런 점에서 김성태의 『영화의 역사』는 감히 기념비적인 역작이라고 할 만하다. 마침내 우리는 영화를 이해하고 사유하기 위해 서가 한쪽에 꽂아두고 언제나 찾아볼 수 있는 영화 관련 참고서를 한 권 얻게 되었다.”라고 강조했다.
저자 김성태 박사 소개
영화학자. 프랑스 파리 3대학 영화학과 박사. 12년간 대학원부터 박사 과정까지 리용 2대학과 파리 3대학에서 수학했으며, 자크 오몽 교수의 지도하에 장-뤽 고다르 연구(Le Cinema de JEAN-LUC GODARD, 1999)로 박사 학위를 취득했다. 씨네21, 필름2.0 등에 글을 쓰고, KBS 미디어를 통해 다수의 프랑스 영화를 번역했다. 지금까지 중앙대, 한예종, 서강대 영상대학원 등에서 학생들과 만났고 현재 성균관대에 출강하고 있다.

Film scholar. Doctorate in Film Department, University of Paris III, France. He studied at the University of Lyon 2 and the University of Paris 3 from graduate school to doctoral studies for 12 years, earning his doctorate in studies of Jean-Luc Godard (Le Cinema de JEAN-LUC GODARD, 1999) under the guidance of Professor Jacques Aumont. He wrote for Cine 21, Film 2.0, etc., and translated numerous French films through KBS Media. He has met with students at Chung-Ang University, Hanyejong, and Sogang University Graduate School of Film, and is currently lecturing at Sungkyunkwan University.
