작년 미국 오하이오주에서 열차 탈선으로 인한 유독성 화학물질의 대량 유출 사고가 발생하였다. 열흘 가까이 지난 지금, 이를 보도한 기자가 체포되어 미국 주류 언론의 주목을 받으면서 트위터의 ‘뜨거운 검색어’가 되었다. 점점 더 많은 사람이 이것은 '끔찍한 환경 재앙'이라는 사실을 깨닫게 되었는데, 심지어 언론인들은 '오하이오 판 체르노빌'이라고 불렀다. 지금까지도 보도가 아예 쉬쉬되고 있는데 사람이 얼마나 죽었는지, 피해 규모는 어느 정도인지에 대해 상세한 언급이 안 되고 있다. 분명 대형사고인데 정부가 나서서 고의적으로 축소시키고 있는 것이다. 미국 정부와 지방 관리들은 지역 공기와 물이 안전하고 “오염을 일으키지 않았다”고 주장하며, 대피했던 지역 주민들에게 집으로 돌아갈 것을 권고하고 있다. 이는 워싱턴의 안보관과 현실 간의 심각한 괴리를 보여주고 있는데 이에 대한 국민들의 알 권리를 정부가 나서서 통제하고 언론 탄압을 하고 있는 것이다. 이런 대형 사고가 터진 날, 미국 바이든 대통령은 러시아 모스크바에 우크라이나 키예프로 간다고 통보를 하고 날아가 우크라이나에 원조 약속까지 하고 왔다.
그는 미국 대통령인지 우크라이나 대통령인지 이제는 햇갈릴 지경이다. 일각에서는 이 오하이오 주 열차 탈선 및 유독 가스 유출사고를 두고 과거 50여 년 전에 벌어진 최악의 다이옥신 오염 사건, 타임스비치 사건의 재현이 아닌지를 우려하고 있다. 환경오염 물질 중 다이옥신에 대해서 뉴스를 통해 종종 들어보았을 것이다. 다이옥신이란 인간이 만든 물질 중 가장 위험하다고 알려진 독극물이고 주로 석탄과 석유, 담배 등을 태우거나 농약 등의 화학물질을 만드는 공장에서 발생하는데, 청산가리보다 1만 배 이상의 강한 독성을 가지고 있다. 이것이 인체에 흡수되면 반 영구적으로 축적되어 기형아 출산과 암 발생의 원인이 된다. 다이옥신이 유출되면서 발생하는 환경 재난도 종종 발생하였는데 그 중에 최악의 사건으로 불리는 것이 미국에서 있었던 타임스비치 사건으로 알려지고 있다. 타임스비치는 1925년 세인트루이스 스타타임스 신문이 메라맥 강변의 땅을 자사 신문 6개월 구독권과 함께 팔던 것에서 만들어졌다.
