윤석열 대통령이 26일 "안보에 지장주지 않는 범위 내에서 주민 수요를 면밀히 검토해 전국적으로 339㎢ 충남 경우 서산비행장 주변 141㎢ 군사시설보호구역을 해제키로 결정했다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 충남 서산비행장에서 '미래산업으로 민생 활력 넘치는 충남' 주제로 15번째 열린 국민과 함께하는 민생토론회 모두 발언에서 "군·지역주민이 상생하는 환경을 조성하는 게 국가적으로 매우 중요하다"며 이같은 정부 결정을 전했다. 이는 여의도 면적 117배에 달하는 역대 가장 큰 규모 보호구역 해제다.
군사시설보호구역은 '군사기지 및 군사시설보호법'에 따라 군사 기지·군사 시설을 보호하고 군사 작전을 원활히 수행하도록 국방장관이 지정하는 구역이다.

더불어 "충남에 새로 조성되는 천안·홍성·논산 세 곳 산단은 계획단계부터 필요한 모든 부수시설들이 완비되도록 복합클러스터로 개발할 것"이라며 "충남서 이런 구상이 실현되면 미래 모빌리티 분야에서만 24조 이상 생산유발효과와 8만명 이상 고용 유발 효과를 거둘 수 있게 된다"고 전했다.
윤 대통령은 천안·홍성 모빌리티 산업 특화 단지 조성 관련해선 "빠른 속도로 준비해 단지 조성 공사에 착공할 수 있도록 하겠다"며 논산시 '국방산업 특화 클러스터' 경우 "금년 내로 부지 조성 설계에 착수해 2026년엔 공사 착공을 할 것이며 속도감 있게 추진하겠다"고 밝혔다.
