▲책이 출간된 2023년은 한·중 수교 31주년을 맞는 해이자 마오쩌둥 탄생 130주년이기도 하다. 마오쩌둥의 리더십과 공산주의 이념은 현대 중국의 정치와 경제, 사회 등 모든 부분에 엄청난 영향을 미쳤다. 때문에 중국을 정확히 이해하기 위해서는 그의 업적, 철학, 공산주의 사상에 대해서 정확히 알아야 한다. 마오쩌둥을 이해하지 못한 상태에서 지금의 중국을 이해할 수 없다. 미·중 패권 대결이 지속되고 있는 상황에서 마오쩌둥이 이끈 중국의 변화를 심층적으로 탐구하고, 그의 인격과 리더십을 비롯해 중국에 대한 보다 깊이 있는 이해를 제공하고자 집필을 기획하게 됐다.
