한국의 국운(國運)은 급속 융성하고 있다. 세계 10대 경제 대국이 됐다. 그런데 개신교 분야에서도 새로운 교단들이 날로 번창, 신앙생활이 자유로운 종교 국가의 이미지를 창출하고 있다.
신천지예수교 증거장막성전(총회장 이만희·이하 신천지예수교회)은 성장은 경이(驚異), 그 자체라고 할 수 있다. 한국 국운융성 시대의 좋은 소식 중의 하나이다.
신천지예수교회는 일부 기성 개신교단과 정통성 시비를 겪어오고 있지만, 급속 성장세를 나타내고 있는 것으로 보고되어 진다.
신천지예수교회는 1984년 3월 14일 창립했다. 올 3월14일이 창립 40주년. 이 교단이 창립 40주년을 맞아 청평 신천지 평화연수원에서 기념식 및 기념예배를 진행했다. 신천지예수교회가 이날 내놓은 보도자료에 따르면, 창립 40주년을 맞은 기념식 현장에는 성도 3만여 명이 참석했다고 한다. 40주년 기념식에 3만 여명이 모였다는 것은, 교세의 성장 정도를 말해주는 대목이다.
신천지예수교회측은 창립 40주년을 맞아 창립부터 현재까지의 변천 과정을 발표했다. 아래는 이 교단이 발표한 교회 성장사의 주요 내용이다.
“신천지예수교회는 1984년 3월 14일 창립했다. 창립 당시 성전을 제대로 갖추지 못해 야외에서 예배를 드리고 있었으며 그 해 6월에야 경기도 안양시 비산동에 소규모의 첫 성전을 마련했다. 같은 해 9월 ‘신천지 성헌(聖憲)’을 발표했으며 이듬해인 1985년 전국 순회 계시록 집회를 시작했다. 창립 11주년인 1995년 3월 14일에는 성경에 기록된 천국의 모양대로 12지파 구성을 완료했다. 이후 1999년에 요한계시록의 실상이 이뤄진 터전인 경기도 과천으로 총회 본부와 성전을 이전해 지금에 이르고 있다. 신천지예수교회의 무료 성경교육기관인 시온기독교선교센터는 1990년 서울 사당센터를 시작으로 전국으로 확대됐으며 성경의 예언 뿐 아니라 그 성취된 실상을 초등, 중등, 고등 과정으로 나눠 교육하고 있다. 2020년부터는 온라인 교육을 시작해 본격적인 통신 신학 시대를 열었다는 평가를 받고 있다. 1991년 1기 수료식을 가진 시온기독교선교센터는 2019년 110기 수료식에서 10만3764명의 수료생을 배출하면서 첫 ‘10만 수료식’을 진행했다. 이후 2022년과 2023년에는 각각 10만6186명과 10만8084명이 수료하면서 2년 연속 10만 수료식이라는 유례없는 성과를 거뒀다. 국내외적으로 폭발적인 성장세를 이뤄가는 신천지예수교회의 해외 선교의 시작은 1993년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 이후 2012년에는 해외에서도 신천지 말씀대성회를 처음으로 개최했다. 각 국가의 국경이 막혔던 2021년 코로나19 팬데믹 상황에서도 온라인 말씀대성회를 개최하자 말씀을 배우기 위해 타 교단으로부터 교류 요청이 쇄도하면서 국내 443개 교회와 해외 77개국 9462개 교회와 말씀 교류 MOU를 체결했다. 특히 해외 38개국 1382개 교회는 말씀교류 이후 아예 신천지예수교 증거장막성전으로 간판을 바꿔 달았다.”

이만희 총회장은 기념식 설교에서 "(신천지예수교회의) 시작은 너무나 미약했다. 그랬지만 오늘날에 이르러 많은 사람이 오게 된 것은 하나님께서 성경에 말씀한대로 하늘의 천사들을 보내주신 것"이라고 꾸준한 성장의 의미와 배경을 설명했다. 이어 "예수님도 한 몸을 다 던져서 하나님의 뜻대로 되기를 원했다. 그러니 오늘날 우리도 맹목적인 믿음이 아니라, 하나님과 우리의 소망을 알고 그 뜻대로 되게 해야 한다"며 "하나님의 뜻을 따라야 하고 이웃을 나와 같이 사랑해야 한다"고 강조했다. 마지막으로 "성경에 기록한 하나님의 목적인 요한계시록을 배우는 사람이 많아지고 있다. 감사한 마음"이라며 "더 많은 사람이 말씀으로 구원받도록 하자. 좋은 세상을 이루기 위해 함께 노력하자"고 당부했다.

주목할 부분은, 이 교단의 사회봉사라 할 수 있다. 신천지자원봉사단이 집계한 봉사 관련 자료를 보면 “2017년부터 지난해 말까지 7년간 58만 1905명의 봉사자가 구슬땀을 흘렸고, 75만 851명이 수혜를 받았다“고 한다. 이 자료는 “이들의 봉사활동을 일수로 환산하면 4만 9768일에 달한다. 집계되지 않은 이전 봉사까지 더하면 단일 봉사단체 기록으로 보기 힘든 정도의 수치”라고 덧붙였다.
