수필집과 여행기 등 책을 여러 권 낸 바 있는 조남대 작가가 이번에는 미국 서부지역을 45일 동안 둘러보면서 관광한 내용으로 『미국 서부, 여기는 가 봐야지』라는 제목으로 여행기를 출간(한국문학신문)했다.
출판사인 한국문학신문은 보도자료에서 “조남대 작가는 연중 온화한 날씨로 미국 은퇴자들이 가장 선호하는 지역인 캘리포니아주 샌디에이고에 머물면서 주변을 비롯하여 LA와 샌프란시스코, 요세미티 국립공원을 관광했다. 내륙으로 들어가 11일 동안 조슈아 트리 국립공원을 거쳐 끝없이 펼쳐진 네바다주의 모하비 사막을 지나 라스베이거스를 둘러보았다. 이어서 유타주의 자이언 캐니언, 브라이스 캐니언, 아치스 국립공원과 애리조나주의 모뉴먼트 밸리, 홀스슈 밴드, 앤텔로프 캐니언과 그랜드 캐니언 등 미국 4개 주의 일곱 곳의 협곡과 국립공원을 거치는 그랜드 서클을 완주한 것이다. 그것도 다섯 살과 일곱 살의 손자 손녀와 함께 3대가 여행했다”면서 “LA 롱비치 항에서 크루즈에 탑승하여 4박 5일 동안 태평양에 있는 ‘카탈리나섬’과 멕시코 ‘라 부파도라’까지 다녀오는 낭만 가득한 여행이었다. 샌디에이고 주변은 자동차를 직접 운전하며 관광하였고, LA와 샌프란시스코, 요새미티 국립공원은 여행사를 통해 둘러보았다. 또 라스베이거스와 7대 협곡과 같은 힘들고 어려운 여정은 작가와 사위가 교대로 운전하였다. 샌디에이고 주변의 썬 셋 클리프트, 발보아 파크, 올드타운, 코로라도 섬, 줄리안과 블랙스비치 등의 맑은 공기와 온화한 날씨 속에서 커피를 마시며 여유롭게 여행을 즐기는 모습은 본 독자들은 부러움을 사기에 충분할 것 같다”고 설명했다.
이어 “라스베이거스를 거쳐 모하비 사막을 가로질러 황량하고 끝없는 도로를 달리는 길은 서부 영화의 현장에 와 있는 것과 같은 기분이 들기도 했으며, 자이언, 브라이스, 그랜드 캐니언 같은 3대 국립공원의 경이롭고 웅장한 규모에는 벌어진 입이 다물어지지 않았다. 샌프란시스코 블루보틀 본점에서 마셨던 커피 맛을 생각하면 지금도 달콤하고 쌉쌀한 감촉이 입에서 감돈다는 작가의 모습과 금문교를 걸어서 건너다 비를 만나 무거운 카메라를 품속에 안고 뛰어갔던 일은 오랜 추억으로 간직될 것 같다”고 소개하고 “미국은 강대국이고 부강한 나라일 뿐 아니라, 길거리에서 사람을 만나면 먼저 웃는 얼굴로 인사하는 모습이 부럽고 보기 좋았다고 한다. 질서를 지키며 다른 사람에게 피해를 주지 않으려는 것을 보면서 역시 문화적으로도 우수한 나라라는 것을 몸소 체험했다. 그렇지만 해외여행 가서 몸이 아프면 애로사항이 많다는 것도 피부로 느꼈다. 미국인 선진국이지만 상상을 초월하는 의료비로 병원 문턱이 높은 것을 체험하고, 우리나라는 건강보험이 잘 되어있어 누구나 아플 때 큰 비용 들이지 않고 병원에 갈 수 있는 살기 좋은 나라라는 것을 알 수 있었다”고 전했다.

Author Cho Nam-dae, who has published several books including essays and travelogues, has published a travelogue (Korean Literature Newspaper) titled “Western America, This is a Place You Should Visit” about his 45-day tour of the western United States.
