건립 부지에서 진행된 착공식에는 황주호 한수원 사장과 정부 관계자, 원전 소재 지자체장과 지역 국회의원 등 150여명이 참석했다.
2026년 완공될 예정인 ‘대학생 연합기숙사(한수원, 용산)’는 한수원이 건립비 460억 원을 전액 기부하고 국토교통부가 국유지 3,698㎡를 무상으로 제공했다. 건립과 운영은 교육부와 한국장학재단이 담당한다.
기숙사에는 원전 소재 지자체(경주시, 기장군, 울주군, 영광군) 지역 주민 자녀 500명이 입주할 수 있다. 월 기숙사비 15만 원 수준으로 저렴한 비용에 이용할 수 있어 원전 주변지역 주민의 자녀 주거비 부담을 크게 덜어줄 것으로 기대된다.
또한 도보 10분 이내로 1·4·6호선 지하철역(용산역, 삼각지역, 효창공원앞역)을 이용할 수 있어 서울지역 대학교와의 교통편의도 우수하다.
기숙사는 서울형 어린이 놀이방, 풋살장, 회의실 등의 공간을 갖춰 인근 주민과 상생하는 복합시설로 이용될 예정이다. 아울러 입주 대학생들이 용산 인근 지역 초중등 학생들의 멘토가 되는 미래 인재육성의 공간으로도 활용될 계획이다.
황주호 한수원 사장은 “원전 지역 출신 대학생들이 주거 걱정 없이 쾌적하고 편안한 공간에서 원대한 꿈을 키워 갈 수 있도록 돕겠다”며, “지역 주민들에게는 경제적 부담과 자식 걱정을 덜어주고, 학생들에게는 공부에 매진하고 또래 친구들과 소통하는 제2의 고향집이 되기를 바란다”라고 밝혔다.
