[브레이크뉴스=양영석 기자] 김해시가 ‘김해시 상징물 조례’개정·공포와 함께 30년 만에 자연 상징물인 시목을 ‘은행나무’에서 ‘이팝나무’로 변경했다고 밝혔다.
종전 시목인 은행나무는 1995년 김해시와 김해군 통합 당시 지정해 사용되었으나 상징성과 대표성이 부족하다는 여론과 가을철 열매 악취로 인한 부정적 인식이 늘어나 변경이 필요하다는 의견이 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.
이에 시는 지난 연말부터 다양한 시민 의견을 수렴하고 전문가 자문과 시의회 의결 등의 절차를 거쳐‘이팝나무’를 새로운 시목으로 최종 선정했다.
‘이팝나무’는 한해의 풍년을 점치는 나무로 신성함을 간직하고 있으며 풍성한 흰 꽃은 풍요로운 김해를 상징한다.
또한 나무의 긴 생명과 역사는 김해시의 무궁한 발전을 상징한다.
이렇듯 시의 상징성을 담고 있는‘이팝나무’는 세계적 희귀종으로 한국과 중국·일본에 주로 분포한다고 알려져 있지만 가로수로 시 전역에서 쉽게 볼 수 있어 시민 친숙도가 높고 주촌면과 한림면에 천연기념물로 지정된 국내 최고령 이팝나무가 각 1그루씩 있어 대표성 또한 충분하다.
