경주시는 13일 신경주농협 일원에서 주낙영 경주시장, 김석기 국회의원, 시·도의원, 주민 등 250여 명이 참석한 가운데 건천지하차도 구조개선사업 준공을 기념하는 축하 행사를 개최했다.
‘건천지하차도’는 서울 청량리와 경주 도심을 잇는 ‘중앙선’ 열차의 효율적인 운행을 위해 1970년 준공된 지하 통행로다
하지만 준공 이후 하절기 침수피해와 동절기 결빙사고는 물론, 주변 상권을 단절시키면서 지역 발전을 가로막는 걸림돌로 작용해 왔다.
이에 시는 지난 2021년 12월 ‘중앙선’이 폐선됨에 따라 국가철도공단과 긴밀히 협의하며 폐철 구조물 철거를 위해 행정력을 집중해 왔다.
그 결과 지하차도를 철거키로 결정하고 지난해 9월부터 지하공간을 메워 주변 도로와 같은 높이로 만드는 구조개선사업에 본격 나서 최근 개통을 완료했다. 이번 사업으로 구조 개선이 이뤄진 평면화 구간은 총 200m다.
김석기 국회의원은 “건천지하차도 구조개선 사업을 통해 마을 간 단절요인을 없애 정주 여건 개선은 물론, 이곳을 지나는 운전자들의 사고 위험도 크게 줄어들 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “이번 건천지하도 평면화 사업으로 주변상권 활력과 정주여건 개선은 물론 교통사고 예방에도 도움이 되리라 기대가 됨은 물론 공사기간 불편을 참고 기다려 주신 지역 주민께 감사의 말씀을 드린다”며 “경주시는 앞으로도 도로 구조개선을 통하여 통행불편 해소에 최선을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.

Nak-young Joo, Mayor of Gyeongju, said, “We are hopeful that this project to flatten the Geoncheon Underpass will not only revitalize the surrounding commercial districts and improve residential conditions, but also help prevent traffic accidents, and we would like to express our gratitude to the local residents who have endured the inconvenience during the construction period.” He emphasized, “We will continue to do our best to resolve traffic inconveniences by improving road structures.”
