역대 한국이 진출한 월드컵에서 1954년 초창기 스위스 월드컵을 제외하고 1986년 멕시코 월드컵 이후 현재까지 최악의 월드컵이 차범근 감독이 지휘했던 1998년 프랑스 월드컵이었다. 그 때 내 기억으론 한국은 멕시코, 네덜란드, 벨기에와 같은 조였고 첫 경기 때, 언론에서 멕시코는 해볼만 하다며 피지컬도 비슷하다며 유럽 팀들보다 훨씬 더 수월하다고 1승 상대라며 온갖 설레발을 쳤던 기억이 있다.
그런데 당시 우리는 멕시코를 A매치에서 단 한 번도 이겨본 적이 없었다. 그런데도 무슨 근거 없는 자신감으로 1승 상대라며 설레발을 떨었는지 알 수 없었다. 당시에 한국은 세계 축구를 월드컵만 보았던 우물 안의 개구리였고 유럽 리그가 얼마나 대단한지 잘 모르던 때였다.
