브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 7일 경북 포항 영일만 심해에 140억배럴의 석유와 가스 매장 가능성을 제시한 미국 심해 기술 평가 전문기업 액트지오가 직접 해명에 나섰다.
정부는 7일 정부세종청사에서 미국 액트지오(Act-Geo)사의 대표인 비토르 아브레우 고문과 함께 동해 가스전 관련 브리핑을 개최했다.
석유·가스전의 신뢰성 의혹이 일파만파 커지자, 직접 조사한 대표가 나와 해명하는 자리를 마련한 것이다.
아브레우 고문은 "홍게 유정은 논리적으로 봤을 때에는 성공한 케이스라고 볼 수가 있다"며 140억 배럴의 석유·가스전 존재 가능성이 높다고 주장했다.
현재 정부는 동해에 주작, 홍게, 방어 등 3개의 시추공을 두고 있는데, 이 중 홍게 유정 부근에 석유와 가스가 대량 묻혀있을 것이라고 했다.

그는 "홍게라 불리는 유정에서는 4가지 재해요인 중에 3가지까지는 확인됐다. 트랩이 첫번째로 확인이 됐고, 두번째로는 덮개암의 품질이 입증이 됐다. 세번째로 가장 중요한 재해요인인 기반암의 존재도 확인됐다"고 설명했다.

또한 한국석유공사측은 액트지오사의 본사가 미국 텍사스 휴스턴의 한 가정집이라는 주장에 대해 "그 주소는 아브레우 고문의 자택"이라며 "다양한 경력의 전문가들이 아브레우를 중심으로 프로젝트 단위로 협업하는 구조라 본사에 상주하는 직원이 없다"고 해명했다.
이어 "액트지오는 2016년 설립 이래 가이아나, 볼리비아, 브라질, 미얀마, 카자흐스탄 등 다수의 주요 프로젝트 평가를 수행했다. 직원들은 엑슨모빌, 쉘, BP 등 메이저 석유개발기업 출신으로 심해탐사 분야에서 전문성을 보유하고 있다"면서 "아브레우라는 분은 엑슨모빌에서 관련된 그룹장도 했고 미국 퇴적학회장도 역임했다. 신뢰도는 높다고 본다"고 말했다.
