중부권 동서횡단철도 건설사업은 충남(서산·당진·예산·아산·천안), 충북(청주·증평·괴산), 경북(문경·예천·영주·봉화·울진) 3개 도, 13개 시·군을 연결하는 총연장 330km, 총사업비 7조원(추정)의 대규모 국책 사업으로 허리 경제권인 서해안 신 산업벨트와 동해안 관광벨트를 연결하여 국토의 균형발전을 이루기 위해 추진하는 사업이다.
이날 회의에는 사업의 사전타당성조사용역 최종보고에 이어 제5차 국가철도망 구축계획 반영 및 향후 사업추진 방향을 논의하는 순으로 진행됐다.
또한 이번 사업의 예비타당성조사 면제 등을 지원하는‘중부권 동서횡단철도 건설을 위한 특별 법안’을 지역구 국회의원들이 함께 대표 발의하여 힘을 보태고 있다.
손병복 울진군수는“중부권 동서횡단철도 건설사업은 허리 경제권으로 중부권 지역의 교통 연계성 강화와 균형있는 지역 경제 발전을 위해 반드시 이뤄져야 할 사업이다”라며“13개 시·군과 함께 결의를 다짐하고 신속한 추진을 위해 지속적으로 노력하겠다”라고 전했다.
