[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시는 우주환경시험시설 구축사업이 국가연구개발사업평가 총괄위원회에서 심의·의결을 거쳐 적정성 검토를 통과과해 사업 시행이 최종 확정됐다고 25일 밝혔다.
우주환경시험시설은 진주시를 포함한 경남도가 지난 2022년 12월 국가우주위원회로부터 우주산업 클러스터 위성특화지구로 지정됨에 따라 구축되는 우주분야 핵심 인프라시설이다.
현재 진주시 상대동에 위치한 국내 최초 우주분야 전문 시험평가시설인 한국산업기술시험원(KTL) 우주부품시험센터의 기반시설을 확충해 정촌면 경남항공국가산단으로 이전 건립된다.
우주환경시험시설 구축사업은 궤도·발사환경 시험장비, 지상 시험장비 등 9종의 장비를 신규로 구축되며, 지난해 8월 예비타당성조사의 면제에 이어 이번 적정성 검토에서 최종 확정됐다.
이번 구축사업은 하반기 기본설계를 시작으로 총사업비는 1554억원이며 지하 1층, 지상 2층, 연면적 1만4194㎡ 규모의 시설로 오는 2025년 착공, 오는 2028년 준공을 목표로 추진된다.
우주환경시험시설 구축이 완료되면 기존 부품급(100kg 이하)뿐만 아니라 여러 부품을 합친 시스템급(500kg 이하)까지 환경시험을 수행해 시는 국제 수준의 시험시설이 될 것이라고 전망했다.
진주시 관계자는 “우주산업 클러스터 삼각체제의 구축이 본격 추진될 것으로 전망한다”며 “우주환경시험시설이 민간 주도 우주산업 생태계 조성의 거점이 되어 지역 우주산업 발전에 기여할 것”이라고 말했다.
