인공지능(AI) 분야 석학 앤드류 응 스탠포드대 교수가 오는 9월 출범 예정인 '국가인공지능위원회' 글로벌 자문그룹에 참여한다고 대통령실이 30일 전했다.
박상욱 대통령실 과학기술수석은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 "응 교수가 이날 윤석열 대통령을 만나 한국 AI 산업 육성에 힘을 보태겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "앤드류 응 교수 접견은 향후 1∼2년이 한국 AI 성패를 결정지을 골든타임이란 윤 대통령의 비상한 인식하에 진행됐다"고 전했다.
응 교수는 그래픽처리장치(GPU)를 활용한 딥러닝 구현 방법론을 개척하고, 구글 브레인을 설립하는 등 산업·학문을 아우르는 AI석학으로 꼽히는 인물이다. 얀 르쿤 뉴욕대 교수·요수아 벤지오 몬트리올대 교수·제프리 힌턴 토론토대 교수 등과 함께 'AI 4대 석학'으로 불린다.
윤 대통령은 이 자리에서 "한국이 반도체·스마트폰 등 세계 최고 수준 하드웨어 경쟁력과 세계 세 번째로 초거대 AI 모델을 개발할 만큼 충분한 소프트웨어 역량을 보유하고 있다"며 "모빌리티·의료 등 다양한 산업 부문에서 AI 전환을 통한 도약을 준비하고 있다"고 말했다.
이에 응 교수는 "한국은 정부 의지가 강력하고 기술혁신 역량이 뛰어나며 AI 필수 반도체 등 산업 기반뿐 아닌 AI 소프트웨어 생태계가 있어 AI 강국이 될 잠재력이 풍부하다"며 "미국·중국에 이어 세계 3대 인공지능 강국이 될 잠재력이 크다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "교육 훈련을 통해 AI 인재를 양성하고 한국 AI 스타트업 생태계가 더욱 발전할 수 있도록 한국 기업과의 긴밀한 협력을 희망한다"며 "AI펀드 코리아를 설립해 한국 AI 스타트업에 투자하겠다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 9월 출범하는 '국가인공지능위원회' 글로벌 자문그룹에 참여해달라고 응 교수에게 제안했고, 응 교수는 "한국 AI 발전과 한·미 국제협력에 힘을 보태겠다"고 화답하며 즉석에서 참여 의향을 밝혔다.
대통령실 관계자는 "글로벌 자문단은 아직 전부 명단을 공개하기 이르다"며 "정말 깜짝 놀랄 만한 세계적 AI 석학·기업인들이 포함돼 있다는 점만 말할 수 있다"고 전했다.
윤 대통령은 AI전략최고위협의회를 국가AI위원회로 격상하고 직접 위원장을 맡는 등 AI 육성에 공들이고 있다. 윤 대통령과 함께 위원회를 이끌어 갈 부위원장엔 염재호 태재대 교수가 내정됐다.
