윤석열 대통령이 21일 "적화통일을 꿈꾸며 호시탐탐 대한민국을 노리고 있는 북한 정권에 '침략은 곧 정권 종말'이란 사실을 확실하게 인식시켜야 한다"고 밝혔다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 올해 '을지 자유의 방패(UFS·을지프리덤실드)' 연습 3일차인 이날 육군 지상작전사령부(지작사)를 방문해 연습에 매진 중인 한·미 장병들을 격려하며 "전 장병은 우리 국민 생명·안전·자유민주주의 체제를 지켜내겠다는 신념으로 무장해야 한다"며 이같이 밝혔다고 정혜전 대통령실 대변인이 오후 서면브리핑에서 전했다.
현직 대통령의 지작사 방문은 지난 2019년 제1야전군사령부·제3야전군사령부를 통합해 지작사를 창설한 이후 이번이 처음이다.
윤 대통령은 지작사 사령부에 도착 후 방명록에 "전장의 중심, 통일의 선봉! 지상작전사령부 장병 여러분이 자랑스럽고 든든합니다"라고 적었다.
윤 대통령은 전투작전본부를 찾아 "북한 정권은 언제든 도발을 감행할 수 있는 지구상에서 가장 비이성적 집단"이라며 "군의 강력한 안보태세만이 저들 오판을 막을 수 있다"고 밝혔다.
또 "UFS 연습은 국가총력전 수행태세를 점검하고 연합방위태세를 강화해 '힘에 의한 평화'를 구현하는 데 있어 중요하다"며 "정부는 3년 동안 중단됐던 UFS 연습을 부활시켜 대비 태세를 굳건히 해 왔고 올해로 세 번째를 맞이하며 연습·훈련을 더욱 체계화하고 있다"고 강조했다.

윤더불어 대화력전수행본부를 방문해 권대원 본부장으로부터 군의 대화력전 수행 체계에 대해 보고받은 가운데 권 본부장은 "수도권을 위협하는 북한 장사정포를 최단 시간 내 파괴해 국민 안전을 보장하겠다"며 "이번 연습 간 일부 예하부대 실제 사격 훈련을 통해 사격 능력을 더욱 강화하고 있다"고 말했다.
윤 대통령은 "전쟁 발발 초기엔 장사정포·미사일 기지 제압이 가장 중요하다"며 압도적 화력대비태세를 주문했다.
