대통령실이 28일 의대 증원을 둘러싼 갈등 해결을 위해 2026년도 의대 정원 확대를 유예하자는 한동훈 국민의 힘 대표 제안에 대해 "유예시 불확실성에 따라 입시 현장에서도 굉장히 혼란이 클 것"이라며 거부 방침을 분명히 했다.
대통령실 관계자는 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 취재진과 만나 "2026학년도 정원은 지난 4월 말 대학별로 정원이 배정돼 공표했다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "현재 고등학교 2학년에 해당하는 학생·수험생·학부모들이 함께 이를 목표로 준비하고 있다"며 "잉크도 마르기 전 다시 논의하고 유예한다면 학생·학부모 입장에선 받아들이기 어려울 것"이라고 지적했다.
또 "이런 불확실성에 따라 입시현장도 논란이 있을 것'이라며 "증원 규모에 대해 변경하려면 과학적·합리적 수치를 갖고 토론해야 한다"고 했다.
이어 "(증원 규모를) 의료계와의 대화만으로, 어떤 협상·타협으로 숫자를 정해선 안 된다 생각한다"며 "국민들 사이에서도 타당한 숫자란 게 공감대를 이뤄야 숫자에 대한 합의가 가능하다 본다"고 말했다.
더불어 "숫자 추계에 대한 논리가 뒷받침 돼야 2026학년도 정원 관련 논의가 가능하지 (의사들이) 반발하니 유예해야겠다, 그건 아니라 본다"고 말했다.
이날 박단 전공의협의회장이 2026학년도 유예안·2025학년도 정원 자체를 백지화하자고 주장한 것 관련해선 "현실인식에 대해 굉장히 의문을 품지 않을 수 없다"며 "수시 입학원서 서류가 오는 9월 5일 예정돼 있고 재외국민 전형은 이미 시작됐다"고 말했다.
