윤석열 대통령이 2일 방한 중인 미국 상원의원단과 만나 "글로벌 포괄 전략 동맹으로 진화한 한·미동맹이 역사상 가장 모범적이고 성공한 동맹 중 하나"라고 강조했다. 이 자리엔 부인 김건희 여사도 함께했다.
대통령실에 따르면 윤 대통령 내외는 이날 저녁 방한 중인 빌 해거티 상원의원을 비롯 미 연방 상원의원 7명·배우자들을 초청해 청와대 상춘재에서 만찬을 갖고 "초당적으로 구성된 상원 의원단 방한을 진심으로 환영한다"며 "지난해 4월 국빈방미 계기 미 상하원 합동 연설 당시 미 의원들이 보내준 뜨거운 환대를 기억하고 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "지난해 4월 '워싱턴 선언'에 이어 올 7월 '한·미 한반도 핵억제 핵작전 지침' 승인을 통해 한·미 일체형 확장억제 시스템이 구축되고 명실상부한 '핵 기반 동맹'으로 격상됐다"며 "지난해 캠프데이비드 정상회의 이후 전례 없는 수준으로 강화되고 있는 한·미·일 협력 체계가 인태지역에서 공동 리더십을 발휘해 나갈 수 있도록 미 의회가 지속 성원해달라"고 당부했다.
방한 의원단장 공화당 소속 해거티 의원(테네시)은 "한·미동맹의 강력한 지지자로서 양국관계를 위해 언제든 필요한 역할을 할 것"이라고 했다. 또 민주당 소속 크리스 쿤스 의원(델라웨어)은 "글로벌 복합도전에 직면해 민주주의 가치를 공유하는 한·미 결속과 연대는 그 어느 때보다 중요하다"고 강조했다.
