윤석열 대통령이 오는 6~7일 방한하는 기시다 후미오 일본 총리와 한·일 정상회담을 갖는다고 대통령실이 3일 전했다.
대통령실은 이날 오후 언론 공지에서 "기시다 총리 방한 시 정상회담 포함 과거 사례와 비슷한 일정이 있을 것"이라며 "회담 상세 의제는 외교 경로를 통해 조율 중"이라고 전했다.
그러면서 "양국 정상이 그간 양국 협력 성과를 되돌아보며 양자·지역·국제무대에서의 양국 간 협력 증진 방안에 관해 논의 계획"이라고 덧붙였다.
양 정상은 지난 2023년 3월 12년 만에 한·일 셔틀 외교를 재개한 가운데 이번 방한으로 12번째 만남을 갖는 가운데 사실상 마지막 셔틀외교가 될 것으로 보인다.
양 정상은 지난해 한·일관계 정상화에 나선 후 셔틀외교·다자 정상회의 자리 등에서 지속 양자 회담을 이어온 가운데 최근 올해 지난 7월 미국 워싱턴DC에서 열린 나토(NATO·북대서양조약기구) 정상회의 계기로 회담을 가졌었다.
특히 지난 2023년 8월 윤 대통령·조 바이든 미국 대통령·기시다 총리는 미국 캠프데이비드에서 열린 3국 정상회의에서 한·미·일 안보·경제 협력 강화에 합의한 바 있다.
기시다 총리는 퇴임 전 윤 대통령과 만나 양국이 추진해온 한·일관계 개선 작업을 점검하면서 향후 내각에서도 지속되길 희망하는 것으로 전해졌다.
기시다 총리는 다음달 27일 치러질 집권 자민당 총재 선거 불출마를 선언한 가운데 총재 선거 후 총리직에서 물러난다.
