9일 대통령경호처장(차관급)에 임명된 박종준 신임 처장(60)은 "대통령제 국가에서 국가원수 안위는 바로 국가안보와 직결되는 중대한 일이기 때문에 대통령 경호에 한치 빈틈 없도록 완벽한 임무수행에 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.
이날 오전 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 박 신임 처장은 "엄중한 시기 대통령 경호책임이란 막중한 임무를 수행하게 돼서 어깨가 무겁다"며 이같이 소감을 전했다.
박 신임 처장은 지난 이명박 정부 어청수 전 경호처장 이후 11년 만의 경찰 출신 경호처장으로 경찰 내에서 '기획통'으로 불린다.
정진석 대통령비서실장은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 "신임 경호처장은 경찰대 2기로 재학 중 행정고시에 합격하고 경찰대를 수석졸업하는 등 일찌감치 경찰 조직 내에서 두각을 보였다"며 "경찰 재직 중엔 주요 기획·총괄조정부서를 거쳐 경찰청 차장까지 역임하며 국민 안전·법질서 확립에 앞장서왔다"고 평했다.
