충남 서산시가 충청남도와 함께 가로림만 갯벌을 세계자연유산으로 등재하기 위해 행정력을 집중한다고 10일 밝혔다.
세계유산은 유네스코 세계유산위원회가 전 세계적으로 탁월한 보편적 가치를 지닌 분야별 유산에 대해 지정·등재해 범세계적으로 보존돼야 할 유산으로 인정한다.
그중 세계자연유산은 현재 우리나라에서 ‘제주 화산섬과 용암동굴’, ‘한국의 갯벌’ 두 가지만 등재됐으며, ‘한국의 갯벌’은 2021년 두 번째로 등재됐다.
2021년 등재된 유산명 ‘한국의 갯벌’은 서천, 고창, 신안, 보성~순천 갯벌을 포함하며, 세계유산위원회로부터 이를 확대 등재할 수 있도록 권고받았다.
이에 시는 올해 8월까지 지역 주민 설명회를 개최했으며, 의견수렴을 통해 9월 충청남도와 협업으로 ‘한국의 갯벌’ 세계유산 등재추진단에 등재 추진 의견을 제출했다.
2025년에는 국가유산청에서 세계유산위원회에 서산시 가로림만을 비롯해 전라남도 무안군, 고흥군, 여수시 갯벌 등재 최종 신청서를 제출할 예정이며, 2026년 최종 심의를 통해 등재 여부를 확정받게 된다.
시는 가로림만이 세계자연유산에 등재되면 갯벌의 생물다양성과 탄소 포집을 통한 기후변화 관련 연구 및 관광 기반 조성 등으로 지속 가능한 지역발전의 계기가 될 것으로 전망했다.
한편, 세계 5대 갯벌인 가로림만은 지구 생물다양성 보전을 위해 가장 중요하고 의미 있는 서식지 중 하나로서 2016년 전국 최초 해양생물보호구역으로 지정됐다.
특히, 멸종위기 철새의 중간 기착지이면서 점박이물범의 서식지로서 환경보호 가치가 매우 높은 지역으로 손꼽힌다.

Seosan City to Promote Registration of 'Garorim Bay Tidal Flat' as World Natural Heritage
Seosan City, South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 10th that it will focus its administrative power to register Garorim Bay Tidal Flat as a World Natural Heritage together with South Chungcheong Province.

The city predicted that if Garorim Bay is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site, it will serve as an opportunity for sustainable regional development through research on climate change through tidal flat biodiversity and carbon capture, as well as the establishment of a tourism infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Garorim Bay, one of the world’s five largest tidal flats, is one of the most important and meaningful habitats for the conservation of global biodiversity and was designated as the first marine life protection area in Korea in 2016.
In particular, it is considered an area with high environmental protection value as a stopover for endangered migratory birds and a habitat for spotted seals.
