경주 자비사에 주석해오던 박삼중 스님이 9월 20일 세수 83세, 법랍 66세로 원적에 들었습니다. 빈소는 동국대 경주병원 장례식장. 발인은 9월 24일이며, 빈소는 동국대 경주병원 장례식장이라고 합니다.
경주 자비사측은 “삼중스님은 1942년 서울에서 출생하여 17세에 해인사에서 경산스님을 은사로 출가했다. 화엄사, 용연사, 자비사 주지 등을 역임했다. 스님은 주로 사회에서 소외된 어려운 이들의 삶의 현장에 적극 동참하는 동사섭(同事攝) 수행을 평생 해오셨는데, 특히 약 60년 가까운 기간 동안 재소자 교화 활동을 펼쳐 ‘사형수들의 아버지’라는 별칭을 얻기도 했다. 또한 한국인 차별에 항거하여 야쿠자를 사살하고 본형무소에서 무기수로 복역하고 있던 재일동포 김희로씨 석방운동을 펼쳐 그의 석방과 귀국에 결정적인 역할을 하기도 했다”고 소개하고 ”언제나 어려운 이들과 함께 해온 공적으로 조계종 종정표창 대한적십자사 박애장 금장 대통령 표창 국민훈장 목련장 등을 수상했다“고 알렸습니다.
경주 자비사측은 “삼중 스님의 생전 뜻에 따라 추모화환 및 조의금은 정중히 사양하오며, 별도의 영결식도 생략하오니 혜량을 바란다”고 덧붙였습니다.

필자는 젊은 시절에 대한불교 조계종의 출입 기자(주간종교 신문의 기자 시절=1979-1981년)를 했었습니다.
이때 불교에 관한 공부를 할 수 있었습니다. 큰 스님들, 김탄허-송월주-박삼중 스님 등과의, ‘취재원과 기자’라는 인맥도 쌓을 수 있었습니다.
특히 교도소 포교에 앞장섰던 박삼중 스님과는 가까운 사이가 됐습니다. 삼중 스님의 교도소 포교 관련 기사를 자주 써왔습니다.
지난 2021년 12월24일. 이 날은 크리스마스 날이었습니다. 필자는 이날 큰 스님으로부터 특이한 크리스마스 선물을 받게 됐습니다.
성천 유달영(1911-2004)은 독립운동가, 농학자, 사회운동가였습니다. 심훈의 소설 ‘상록수’의 주인공이기도 했다. 성천은 서예가이기도 했습니다. 그런데 삼중 스님으로부터 “오랜 동안 소장해오던 성천 유달영의 ‘인간은 만남으로 자란다’는 서예작품을 선물로 주겠다“는 전화가 걸려 연락이 왔습니다.
이 선물은 사람의 기분을 좋게 만들었습니다. 이 날은 기분이 아주 좋은 날이었습니다. 유달영 선생은 무교회주의자 김교신의 애제자 였습니다.
필자는 대학(강남대학 신학과)에서 졸업 논문으로 ‘김교신의 무교회주의’를 썼습니다. 유달영, 김교신이 아꼈던 제자였다는 것 때문에 더더욱 기쁜 날이었습니다. 스님이 주신' 기분 좋은 x-mas 선물이었습니다. 그 해의 산타크로스는 박삼중 스님이셨습니다.
