장기표 신문명정책연구원 원장이 9월 22일 별세했습니다. 세수 78세. 장 원장님은 말년에 담낭 암으로 투병 중이셨습니다.
필자는 지난 2023년 2월21일 저녁, 한화갑 전 민주당 대표, 장기표 신문명정책연구원 원장 님과 저녁을 함께 했었습니다.
별세한 장기표 원장님은 한국노총을 탄생시킨 산파(産婆)이셨습니다. 1945년생. 서울대학교 법과대학 법학과를 졸업 했습니다.
장기표 원장님은 7번이나 국회의원에 출마했으나 모두 낙선, 한결같이 정치권의 비주류로 활동하셨습니다. 그리하여 “영원한 재야(在野)”라는 별명을 얻기도 했습니다.

지난 2002년 영등포을 보궐선거에 출마 했으나, 아쉽게도 이때에도 낙선했습니다. 한화갑 민주당 대표 시절, 영등포을 보궐선거 후보로 장기표 원장을 공천했었습니다.
한화갑-장기표, 두 정치인은 서울대학 선후배 사이로, 친한 관계였습니다.
지난 2023년 2월21일, 서울시 종로구 인사동 툇마루 식당에서 막걸리를 주거니 받거니 마시면서 옛날의 정치적인 영화(榮華)를 불러냈었습니다.
언젠가 장기표 원장님께서 필자를 국회가 있는 여의도로 불러냈습니다. 이 어른이 필자에게 “정당을 만들어, 함께 정치 합시다”라고 말했습니다. 신문사 발행인-기자인 필자에게 덕담을 건네신 것이리라 미루어 짐작을 합니다.
고 장기표 원장님, 팔자에 국회의원 배지를 달지 말라는 게 있었나 봅니다.

Director Jang Ki-pyo of the New Politics Policy Research Institute passed away on September 22. He was 78 years old. Director Jang had been battling gallbladder cancer in his later years.
On the evening of February 21, 2023, I had dinner with former Democratic Party leader Han Hwa-gap and Director Jang Ki-pyo of the New Politics Policy Research Institute.
The late Director Jang Ki-pyo was the midwife who gave birth to the Federation of Korean Trade Unions. Born in 1945. Graduated from the Department of Law at Seoul National University.
Director Jang Ki-pyo ran for the National Assembly seven times, but was defeated every time, and has consistently been active as a non-mainstream figure in politics. As a result, he earned the nickname “Eternal Outsider.”
