윤석열 대통령이 27일 방한 중인 스펜서 콕스 미국 유타 주지사를 접견하고 '한인 동포들에 대한 관심·지원'을 당부했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 콕스 주지사를 접견하고 항공우주·바이오·첨단 제조업 등 분야에서 유타주와의 협력 확대 및 한·미동맹 발전 방향 등에 대한 의견을 나누며 이같이 말했다.
윤 대통령은 먼저 콕스 주지사 첫 방한을 환영 후 지난해 10월 유타주 차원의 한·미동맹 70주년 기념식에 콕스 주지사가 참석해 '한·미동맹의 날'을 선포하는 등 한·미동맹의 든든한 후원자 역할을 해주고 있는 것에 사의를 표했다.
그러면서 유타주에 거주 중인 한인 동포 약 1만 5천명이 지역 사회 일원으로서 유타주 발전에 기여할 수 있도록 콕스 주지사 관심·지원을 당부했다.
콕스 주지사는 "유타주가 6·25 전쟁 당시 군인 2만 1천여명을 파병해 한국과 함께 싸운 오랜 친구"라며 "앞으로도 한·미동맹 강화를 위해 노력을 아끼지 않겠다"고 말했다.
또 "유타주 기술 중심지이자 주도 솔트레이크시티가 약 33만 개 스타트업이 모여있는 '실리콘 슬로프'소재지로 미국 차세대 스타트업 수도로 성장하고 있다"며 "우수 한국 기업이 유타주에 더욱 활발히 진출할 수 있도록 관심가져 달라"고 요청했다.
