윤석열 대통령이 16일 더그 버검 미국 노스다코타 주지사를 접견하고 한·노스다코타 간 협력 확대 및 한·미동맹 발전 방안 등 관련해 의견을 나눴다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 아닐 오후 용산 대통령실에서 버검 주지사를 만나 방한을 환영하며 "(노스다코타주는) "6·25 전쟁 당시 약 2만7000명 장병을 파병해 대한민국 자유를 위해 함께 싸운 한국과 각별한 인연을 가진 곳"이라며 "글로벌 포괄 전략 동맹으로 진화한 한·미동맹처럼 한·노스다코타 협력도 다방면으로 확대되길 바란다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "버검 주지사가 이번 방한을 계기로 한·노스다코타 간 협력 뿐 아닌 한·미동맹 지속 발전을 위해 적극적 역할을 해달라"며 "노스다코타주 거주 2700여 명 한인 동포들이 지역사회 모범적 일원으로 기여해 나갈 수 있도록 주정부 차원의 관심·지원을 해달라"고 당부했다
버검 주지사는 "한국과의 협력 강화가 최우선 관심 사항"이라며 "에너지·농업·항공 산업(무인 드론 등)·미래 산업(수소 생산 등) 분야에서 미국 내 중심지로 발돋움해 나가고자 한다"며 "동 분야에서 혁신을 선도하는 한국 기업들과의 협력을 심화할 수 있길 희망한다"고도 말했다.
또 "한·미 간 대북 핵 억지력 강화를 다짐한 '워싱턴 선언'을 강력 지지한다"며 "앞으로도 한·미동맹이 계속 발전할 수 있도록 가능한 역할을 다하겠다"고 말했다.
