브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미국 백악관은 23일(현지시각) 북한군의 러시아 파병설과 관련해 "사실이 맞다"고 공식 발표하면서 동맹국들과 대응 방안을 논의할 것이라고 밝혔다.
존 커비 백악관 국가안보 소통보좌관은 이날 정례브리핑을 통해 "우리는 이달 초부터 중순까지 북한군 최소 3000명의 병력이 러시아 동부로 이동한 것으로 평가한다"며 "북한 원산에서 러시아 블라디보스토크까지 배를 타고 이동한 것으로 판단했다"고 말했다.
미국은 한국이 북한군 파병 증거를 공식적으로 발표한 이후 닷새동안 "증거 수집을 위한 조사가 진행 중"이라며 파병 여부를 판단하지 않아왔다.
미국이 이번 공식적으로 밝힌 파병 규모는 앞서 국가정보원 발표와 일치했다. 국정원은 앞서 "현재까지 러시아로 이동된 병력 규모는 총 3000여명으로 판단하고 있다"고 밝힌 바 있다.

커비 보좌관은 북한이 파병으로 얻을 수 있는 이득에 대해선 "기술일 수도 있고 능력이 될 수도 있다. 아직 잘 알지 못하는 부분이지만 매우 우려되는 부분이다"라며 "우크라이나 전쟁에 미칠 영향 뿐만 아니라 인도태평양 안보에도 영향을 미칠 수 있어 우려된다"고 설명했다.

Kirby also said, "We are consulting closely with our allies and partners about the implications of these dramatic moves by North Korea and how we will respond," adding, "We are talking with our allies and partners about what the right next steps might be, and we are not in a position to discuss specific options, but we will continue to increase our security assistance to Ukraine."
