14일 경주시는 ‘경주시 복합문화도서관 건립 사업’이 총 사업비 787억 원을 들여 황성동 948-5 일원에 지하 1층, 지상 3층, 연면적 1만 1108㎡ 규모로 건립될 예정이라고 밝혔다. 주요 사업비는 한국수력원자력의 자금 지원을 통해 추진된다.
경주시 복합문화도서관은 천년고도 경주에 어울리는 랜드마크 도서관이자, 지방소멸 위기 극복과 지역 활성화를 목표로 한 미래지향적 공간으로 자리 잡을 것으로 기대된다.
이번 타당성 조사는 한국지방행정연구원(LIMAC)이 맡았으며, 올해 1월부터 시민 설문조사와 현장 실사 등을 통해 사업의 경제성과 정책적 타당성을 평가했다.
조사 결과, 재원 조달 가능성, 사업 대상지 입지, 추진 의지가 적정하다는 긍정적인 평가를 받았다.
이를 바탕으로 경주시는 지방재정투자심사를 신속하게 마무리하며 사업 추진에 속도를 높였다.
현재 ‘경주시 복합문화도서관’의 건축 기획 용역이 진행 중이며, 내년에는 설계 공모와 실시 설계를 통해 세부 계획을 확정할 예정이다.
모든 계획이 순조롭게 진행될 경우 2026년 착공에 들어가 시민들의 염원이었던 ‘경주시 복합문화도서관’이 현실화될 전망이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “경주시에 걸맞은 랜드마크 도서관을 세워 지역민들의 문화적 갈증을 해소하고, 경주의 미래 성장 동력을 확보하겠다”며, “앞으로도 지역 활성화를 위한 노력을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.
