서천군이 농림축산식품부의 ‘2025년도 배수개선사업’ 대상지로 주항지구와 신곡지구를 신규 선정되며, 집중호우로 인한 농경지 침수 문제 해결에 본격적으로 나선다. 이번 사업 선정으로 서천군은 국비 195억 원을 확보했다.
그동안 서천군은 반복되는 농경지 침수 피해를 해소하기 위해 충청남도와 긴밀히 협력하며 배수개선사업을 적극적으로 추진해왔다. 특히, 충청남도 및 농림축산식품부를 수차례 방문해 사업 필요성을 강조한 끝에 이번 신규 사업지로 최종 선정되는 성과를 거뒀다.
이번 사업에 따라 주항지구는 2025년 기본계획을 수립하고 2026년 공사에 착수할 예정이며, 신곡지구는 2025년 세부 설계를 마친 후 곧바로 공사에 들어간다. 사업이 완료되면 서면 부사·도둔리, 시초면 신곡·초현리 일대 농경지에서 발생하는 침수 피해를 효과적으로 예방할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
김기웅 서천군수는 “오랜 기간 해결되지 못했던 농경지 침수 문제를 국비 지원을 통해 해결할 수 있게 되어 의미가 크다”며 “사업을 차질 없이 추진해 해당 지역 농민들이 안정적으로 영농활동을 이어갈 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
서천군은 이번 배수개선사업을 통해 기후 변화로 인한 집중호우 피해를 최소화하고, 안정적인 농업 기반을 조성하는 데 주력할 방침이다.
