충남 예산군이 환경부 공모사업에 선정돼 예산황새공원 일대를 연결하는 국가생태탐방로 조성사업을 본격 추진한다. 군은 다음 달부터 공사에 착수해 올해 10월 완공할 계획이라고 6일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 환경부의 국가 생태 탐방로 조성사업으로, 총 12억 원이 투입된다. 예산황새공원은 2023년 10월 생태관광지역으로 지정된 데 이어, 생태환경 및 자원의 보전 가치를 인정받아 탐방로 조성사업 대상지로 선정됐다.
탐방로는 황새공원과 보강지, 살목지를 연결하는 4.3km 구간에 조성되며, 주요 사업 내용은 △산책로 포장(야자매트·흙) △조류 전망대 설치 △야외습지 나무 식재 등으로 구성된다. 이를 통해 탐방객들은 황새의 서식지를 더욱 가까이에서 체험할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
예산황새공원은 2015년 국내 최초로 천연기념물 199호이자 멸종위기야생생물 1급인 황새 방사에 성공한 곳으로, 현재까지 총 122마리를 야생에 돌려보냈다. 이곳에서 사육된 황새뿐만 아니라 자연 번식한 개체까지 포함하면 현재 375여 마리가 전국은 물론 러시아, 중국, 일본, 대만 등지에서 서식하고 있는 것으로 확인됐다.
최재구 예산군수는 “이번 탐방로 조성사업을 통해 자연보전과 체험관광을 동시에 실현할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”며 “주민 소득 창출과 지역 경제 활성화에도 기여할 수 있도록 인근 마을 주민들과 협력해 차별화된 생태관광 거점으로 만들어 나가겠다”고 밝혔다. 군은 이를 위해 오는 3월 주민 협의체를 구성해 지역주민이 직접 참여하는 생태관광 모델을 구축할 계획이다.
한편, 예산황새공원은 이번 사업을 통해 자연과 인간이 공존하는 생태관광 명소로 자리 잡을 전망이다.
