20일 경주시에 따르면 세계청년리더총연맹(WFPL) 부설 지자체 혁신평가위(GEC)가 주관한 이번 시상은 지자체의 경쟁력 강화와 사회적 약자 배려, 건강한 교육환경 구축 등의 목적을 중심으로 평가해 주어진다.
이번 평가는 WF지자체혁신지수(WFLGII)에 따라 지난 2022년 7월 1일부터 2024년 11월 30일까지 실시됐으며, 주 시장은 최고 평점 획득해 수상자로 선정됐다.
주 시장은 △APEC 정상회의 유치 △차세대 원자력산업 발전 △e-모빌리티 연구단지 구축 △어려운 서민경제 안정화 △황리단길 조성 △어르신 시내버스 무료 이용 등의 공로를 인정받았다.
경주는 지난해 6월 삼국통일 이후 최대 성과라 평가받는 2025년 APEC 정상회의를 유치했으며, 지난해 11월에는 APEC 정상회의 지원 특별법이 국회 본회의를 통과했다.
차세대 미래형 원자로인 SMR을 본격적으로 연구·개발하는 문무대왕과학연구소와 이를 제조·수출하는 SMR 국가산단 조성 사업을 추진해 차세대 원전산업 메카로 발돋움하고 있다.
지역 뿌리산업인 자동차제조업이 자동차산업 패러다임 변화에 대응할 수 있도록 미래차 첨단소재 성형가공센터와 탄소소재 부품 리사이클링센터 등 기술 지원 기반을 구축해 왔다.
중심상권 르네상스 사업의 지속적 추진과 경주페이 활성화, e-커머스·온라인 플랫폼 판로 지원, 전통시장 환경개선으로 서민과 소상공인 모두 활력을 되찾을 수 있도록 지원했다.
황리단길은 한옥에 대한 건축 행정절차 간소화, 보행 친화 거리 조성, 대릉원 입장료 폐지 등 행정적·재정적 뒷받침으로 사계절 내내 많은 인파가 몰려드는 전국 최고의 명소로 자리 잡았다.
올 7월부터는 경주시 거주 70세 이상 어르신이면 누구나 시내버스를 무료로 이용하게 된다. 이달부터는 어르신 기본요금 무료택시 1회 사용 한도가 8000원 → 1만2000원으로 늘고, 연간 지원 금액도 13만2천원 → 16만원으로 인상된다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “이번 혁신평가를 통해 경주시가 그간 역점적으로 추진한 사업들이 인정받게 돼 매우 기쁘게 생각한다”라며 “앞으로도 적극적이고 혁신적인 행정을 통해 전국에서 가장 살기 좋은 명품도시 경주를 만드는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
