홍성군, "홍주읍성" 성곽 복원 본격 착수

충남 홍성군이 사라진 홍주읍성 성곽 복원 사업을 본격적으로 추진하며, 역사적 정체성 회복과 관광자원 개발에 속도를 낸다.

군은 2023년 북문 동측 성벽 복원을 시작으로, 오는 3월부터 북동측 및 북서측 성곽 정비공사를 본격 착수해 2026년 9월까지 완료할 계획이다.

이번 복원·정비 대상은 ▲북문 동측성벽에서 조양문까지 이어지는 북동측 성곽(185m) ▲북문에서 옛 정보화교육장에 이르는 북서측 성곽(185.6m)이며, 발굴조사가 진행 중인 동남측 성곽(111m)도 오는 7월 조사를 마무리할 예정이다.

사업 추진에 따라 성내 도로 체계도 일부 변경된다. 북동측 성곽 복원 구간에 포함된 소로 3-13호(오관리 411-2 일원) 일부가 영구 폐지되며, 조양문 주변 임시주차공간도 철거된다. 또한, 동남측 성곽 발굴조사 구간 내 소로 3-15호 일부는 4월까지 임시 폐쇄될 예정이다.

홍성군 관계자는 “복원·정비 과정에서 도로 및 주차공간 조정이 불가피하지만, 홍주천년의 역사성을 회복하고 관광 인프라를 구축하기 위한 사업인 만큼 군민들의 이해와 협조를 부탁드린다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 군은 성곽 복원과 함께 홍주천년문화체험관 주변 경관을 고려한 연못 및 정자 조성, 조양문 인근 여가·휴식공간 제공을 위한 조양공원 조성 등도 병행 추진한다. 이를 통해 역사·문화유산과 현대적 관광 요소가 조화를 이루는 환경을 조성하고, 지속적인 관광 활성화 성과를 창출한다는 방침이다.
