이 논문은 ‘감각신경과 그 전달기전에 기반을 둔 침구치료 효과의 요인 분석’(Therapeutic components of acupuncture stimulation based on characteristics of sensory nerve and nervous signaling pathway)을 주제로 진행된 연구의 결과물이다.
위효선 학생은 김승남 교수의 지도 아래 침구 치료의 효과를 감각신경과의 연관성을 통해 분석하고, 침구치료에 영향을 미치는 여러 요소들을 정리하는 연구를 수행했다.
위효선 학생은 연구에 대해 “이번 연구에서는 침구 치료의 핵심 요소들이 감각신경 자극에 미치는 영향을 분석했으며, 특히 경혈의 특성(혈위, 깊이, 민감성), 자극 방식(수기침, 전침, 뜸)과 조건(강도, 빈도, 시간 등), 그리고 치료 과정에서 발생하는 감각 요소(득기감 등)에 따라 자극 및 효과가 달라질 수 있음을 정리했다”며, “이러한 분석을 통해 침구 치료를 신경과학적 관점에서 해석하고, 보다 정밀한 치료 전략을 수립하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”고 밝혔다.
김승남 교수는 연구의 배경을 설명하며, “2021년 Ma 교수의 Nature 논문에서 침구치료 기전이 다뤄졌고, 이 논문에서는 족삼리 침치료가 미주신경-부신 축을 활성화하여 항염증 효과를 유도하는 메커니즘을 제시했다. 우리는 그 연구를 바탕으로 특이적 감각신경이 침구 치료의 효과를 매개하는 중요한 요인임을 밝히고, 이를 확장하여 침구 치료에서 신경 자극에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인들을 체계적으로 정리하고자 했다”고 말했다.
이어 김 교수는 “이번 연구는 침구 치료의 다양한 요소들이 정량화되고, 이를 바탕으로 치료의 표준화가 가능해지는 과학적 기반을 마련할 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 가진다”며, “향후 침구 치료의 과학화를 위한 연구가 지속될 것이며, 보다 정확하고 향상된 치료 효과를 위한 연구가 계속 이어질 것”이라고 연구의 의의를 강조했다.
동국대학교 한의과대학은 2018년부터 학부생들을 대상으로 연구 장학프로그램을 운영하며, 학생들이 실제 연구에 참여하고 논문 저자로 활동할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있다. 이번 논문은 위효선 학생이 단독 제1저자로, 김승남 교수가 단독 교신저자로 참여한 결과물이다.

A research paper jointly conducted by Professor Seungnam Kim and 4th year student Hyo-seon Wi of Dongguk University College of Oriental Medicine was published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine, an SCI journal, on February 27, 2025.
This paper is the result of a study conducted on the topic of ‘Therapeutic components of acupuncture stimulation based on characteristics of sensory nerve and nervous signaling pathway’.
Under the guidance of Professor Seungnam Kim, student Hyo-seon Wi conducted a study to analyze the effects of acupuncture treatment through its correlation with sensory nerves and to organize various factors affecting acupuncture treatment.
Regarding the study, Wi Hyo-seon said, “In this study, we analyzed the effects of key elements of acupuncture treatment on sensory nerve stimulation, and in particular, we summarized that stimulation and effects can vary depending on the characteristics of acupuncture points (points, depth, sensitivity), stimulation methods (hand acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion) and conditions (intensity, frequency, time, etc.), and sensory elements (emotional sensation, etc.) that occur during the treatment process.” He added, “Through this analysis, we expect to be able to interpret acupuncture treatment from a neuroscientific perspective and contribute to establishing more precise treatment strategies.”
Professor Kim Seung-nam explained the background of the study, saying, “The mechanism of acupuncture treatment was discussed in Professor Ma’s 2021 Nature paper, and this paper suggested the mechanism by which Zusanli acupuncture treatment activates the vagus nerve-adrenal axis to induce anti-inflammatory effects. Based on that study, we revealed that specific sensory nerves are important factors mediating the effects of acupuncture treatment, and expanded this to systematically organize various factors that affect nerve stimulation in acupuncture treatment.”
Professor Kim continued, “This study is significant in that it can establish a scientific foundation for quantifying various elements of acupuncture treatment and standardizing treatment based on this,” and emphasized the significance of the study, saying, “In the future, research for the scientificization of acupuncture treatment will continue, and research for more accurate and improved treatment effects will continue.” Dongguk University College of Oriental Medicine has been operating a research scholarship program for undergraduate students since 2018, providing opportunities for students to participate in actual research and act as authors of papers. This paper is the result of student Wi Hyo-seon as the sole first author and Professor Kim Seung-nam as the sole corresponding author.
