세종시가 26일 소정면과 전의면 주민들의 오랜 숙원이었던 군사시설보호구역 해제를 이끌어내며 지역 주민들의 재산권 행사를 제한했던 문제를 해결했다.
이번 해제는 40년간 지속된 보호구역의 제약을 끝내는 중요한 전환점이 되었다.
해제된 군사시설보호구역은 소정면과 전의면 일대 약 43만 1556㎡에 달하며, 이날 0시를 기점으로 공식적으로 해제되었다.
이 결정은 지난해 4월, 해당 보호구역 내 사유지를 소유한 소정면 주민 50여 명이 시청에 해제 탄원서를 제출한 데서 시작되었다. 이후 시는 국방부에 군사시설보호구역 해제를 정식으로 건의하며 적극적인 대응에 나섰다.
세종시는 1985년부터 군부대가 주둔하면서 주민들이 겪어온 불편을 해소하기 위해 해제를 적극 추진해왔다.
특히, 주둔하던 부대가 2014년에 부강면으로 이전한 이후 해당 부지가 10년간 활용되지 않고 있음에도 불구하고 군사시설보호구역 해제가 지연된 점을 감안하여 주민들의 권익 보호 필요성을 강력히 주장했다.

이제 해당 지역 주민들은 건축 및 재산 활용을 위한 다양한 계획을 자유롭게 추진할 수 있게 되었다.
